I went to Cades Cove in May and used my Nikon D750 almost exclusively due to poor light a lot of the time. I use a 300mm F4 (old one) and 1.4 tc. I was happy with results even with a bigger crop. I typically shoot with a D500.
Nice shots! Just wondering if the first and second shots were taken at the same time (shoot). It appears to be the same bear but the coat on the first looks really roughed up or like it could be wet.

Thank you! Actually you are right about first one being wet. It was raining and then sprinkling when I got this shot. The second is a different bear on another day. We got lucky and saw lots of bears!
Outstanding. I would have thought the D500 would be just as good in low light. I do find that my D750 is good in low light but it is older technology.
Thank you! I think it is because it is full frame so you get a little more light with it. I do love my D500 though and use that in FL (home) almost exclusively. Great for birds in flight!
