I used a label maker to print labels that I stuck onto the tops of some lens cases. I can see at a glance which lens is which.

Why? I always carry my lenses face down in my camera bag. Lens cases get in the way. When storing my lenses they go into my Ruggard Dry cabinet.
My lens cases are all in the original box they came in and stay there until I sell the lens.

I should have stated my reason. It's so that I will know what the lens is when in a bag, or on a shelf.

Great answers. I think I'll go with the key tag idea. Thanks.

I not sure what you want. I put a paper label on all my lens caps with the lens size ( I have a full frame and a non full frame --5D --7D) So I will have size for both to see at a glance 100mm / 160mm or 100-200 /160-320.
Now if you met ID I put several of men cards in all my carrying containers.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a detailed post, in in including pictures about my method of labeling gear with my Brother label maker. I hope you will find it informative.

[quote=CHG_CANON]What information do you want to put on the label? Lens model? Name & Address? Other? For this 70-200, isn't the content (lens inside) already obvious from the bag?

I’m very interested in this thread. The bag(s) for my 70-200 and 100-400 are virtually identical and can be used interchangeably. I too would benefit from a solution. My current work around is a string tied around one hand strap.

I use a Casio label maker that looks like the Brother that Mr. Shapiro has. I don't use cases but labeled the lens hoods since Nikon's numbers give no indication what lens they are for. In the bag the hoods often have to come off and the labels ease the matchup. With the hoods back on when the lenses are in the cabinet it makes it easy to see what's what.

The labels do peel off clean.

Pet shops sell tags of varying sizes and shapes. There also is a rubber ring that goes around it to prevent jingling. You can have whatever you would like engraved upon it. It attaches via a small chain or you can use a ring. This works well and does not damage the case.

I just looked around and realized I don’t have any lens cases. My lenses are lined up uncased on a shelf or in my think tank fanny pack. I can see what they are without a label.

I've used a couple of solutions for labeling over the years. Currently, I place my lenses front-down (mount facing up) in my camera bags so I concentrate on labeling the rear lens cap. Lens Bling used to make custom caps marked with ID, such as 70-200, and I have some of those, but they are no longer available and were never available for everything. Now I use them plus Sensi re-writable lens caps for many lenses, but the erasable markers they are designed for rub off constantly. Most recently I have purchased a DYMO portable label maker (less than $ 50 on sale, and about $10 for a tape) and have been having success with that. I do find that I prefer 'knockoff' rear lens caps because they don't have the Nikon name embossed on them and thus provide more space for the label. In some cases, when I store the lens rear down in my bags, I have added a label to the front lens cap. Lots of methods out there. Best of luck.

How much do you want to spend to make it look neat and professional? I would find a seamstress or canvas shop to embroider a label and sew it to the case. Maybe different colors for different lenses while you are at it. As far as the lens cap, mine all have Canon on them. If for some reason I wanted to mark them I would paint out one of the white letters with a particular color for each different size. Or, I would just stick with my current system of "This isn't the lens I meant to put in my bag!"

Sigma solved that problem. Their hoods have the lens name on them. I discovered that when I was trying to put the hood on my 135mm lens. That's when I discovered that right on the hood, it said 50-100mm!

I made my own labels with a Brother P-Touch model 1850 about $100. You design your own labels different colors of tape available, in various tape widths available. This model handles up to 1" tap. I have all my gear marked from lens caps to batteries. The label tape is thin, self adhesive looks professional.

I use a Sharpie - fine point. Silver. Shows up well enough on a black background.
Never had any problem of it bleeding.
