I use the lock switch on a memory card with an adaptor. For some reason my computer seems to acknowledge the card better with the switch in the locked position. I had been having trouble with it.
I've had a couple of cards over the years with loose switches. So loose in fact that it became difficult to insert them into my camera or computer without sliding them to the locked position.
The simple solution was a tiny drop of super glue on the slider while in the unlocked position. No more problems.

Do you use the lock function on the SD memory and if so how do you use it? What for?
Only inadvertently. A slip of the finger when inserting can accidentally move the switch.

Never have had the need to.
Well the microSD card does not have a write protect switch. So there.
I have wondered why cameras do not use microSD cards since they consume less valuable space. They seem to be available in all of the way too many variants of SD cards.
BTW I just checked the Wikipedia article on SD cards. It covers all the details in a very complete form. Probably authored by the SD association. It does, however, omit a useful description of the top secret digital rights management functions.

Hmmm.
What could they put in the little difference in space?

I never use it. I transfer all my photos to an external drive and then to my PC for editing. Then I reformat the card and use it over and over. Been doing this for years. My theory is that a new card can be faulty just like an old one, only quicker. I reformat in-camera but I don’t thing the process does a full format to identify faulty sectors, more likely just a quick format. That may be why cards go bad from time to time.

Its purpose is to write protect the card. And, no I never need to use it.

No, never. No real need to use. I've used it once or twice just to check it out but found out they are rather fragile and break easy. After breaking one, I decided to never touch one again.
