My next door neighbor came over last evening and said I needed to grab my camera. He led me next door to one of his bushes. There were two large Writing Spiders there. Needless to say, the shooting started. Attached are four photos of the spiders. As the light breeze was gently moving the webs, the focusing is not perfect. Glad these are in my neighbor's yard.

Great shots, but they can stay in the East.

I'm assuming since you're in NM you consider Texas the east? We've got them all around Texas and they can get pretty big & their dew covered webs can be phenomenal.

Nice photos Jack.

Excellent shots, but we don't want them over this side of the pond!

Since Jack lives in South Carolina, I thought they were native to the East. Didn’t know you had them in Texas. My bad.

@NMGal , no worries. I believe that spider has a pretty wide range. Was just being tongue-in-cheek about being "Eastern."

Very nice!

FYI: some biologists think that the big wavy line through the nest prevents bats from flying through the nest at night - the bats might otherwise "see" a struggling insect as if it were flying, and the bats would swoop down to grab it - and end up destroying the web. With this heavy strip of web, it looks to the bat like a stick, so the bat will avoid it.

While shaking memory banks from years ago, I believe these are harmless. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
