Why do folks buy third party lenses?

In 1995, I switched from Pentax to Canon specifically because their EF/USM lenses were clearly superior to the Pentax and Nikon lenses of the time.

In 2007 I got my first Rebel, and then a couple years later I got a Sigma 10-20mm lens. When I switched back to Pentax in 2015 because of the bodies, that Sigma lens was the one lens I missed - and then I discovered they make it in K-mount also .... so I don’t miss that afterall.

Why buy lenses from let’s say Tamron or Sigma, as opposed to OEM lenses from the camera manufacturer? Wouldn’t Nikon lenses for Nikon cameras or Canon lenses for Canon cameras, etc. be better in general than third party lenses?

If cost is the main issue, wouldn’t a used OEM lens in excellent condition be better in general than a new third party lens? I guess used third party lenses still beat out used OEM lenses cost wise.

I understand that Tamron and Sigma lenses are popular. Just curious as to why?

It depends on the lens. I was looking at a Canon 14mm Fish Eye. It was okay. I looked at a Rokinon. I was awe struck.
I was looking for a tilt shift Lens. Canon was too expensive so I looked at a Rokinon 24mm Tilt Shift. My wife also bought me as a birthday present a Canon 70-300mm lens.
So not all Original Equipment Manufacturers offer a better lens. My Rokinons do just fine. I don't think it is a matter of OEM being better than third party. I think the third party might make the image pop!

Third party lenses can sometimes fill in the gaps. Nikon makes 105 1.4 but Canon does not. Sigma makes its own rendition in a Canon mount. Those wanting that focal length don't have to wait for a lens to use that may never be made by Canon.

I bought a Tokina ultra wide angle because no other lens offers a range from 12-28mm. It wasn't cheap but it's built like a tank. Normally I stick with Canon.

Thank you all for your comments. Good to hear that third party lenses can fill in the gaps, and oftentimes have quality lenses equal to or better than those from the camera manufacturers, and that it's also not just about price. I've just shot Fuji ... and didn't know that!

Much appreciated!

My personal reason is that Sigma and Tamron make many lenses that OEM won't, or maybe CAN'T make themselves. And always at a much better price. And at least in the case of Canon, a MUCH better warranty!

Don't knock them until you try them. I am a longtime Nikon owner, but I have bought lenses other than Nikon brand, and have had excellent results with them. Tamron, in particular, is now one of the leaders in lens quality today. I recently purchased the Tamron 70-210 F4 lens, and it is an awesome lens. Perhaps the Nikon 70-200 F4 lens is equally sharp and awesome (I cannot imagine it being better than the Tamron), but I am very satisfied with my Tamron. Just my two cents worth.

I've always, for 50 years, only had Nikon lenses and been very satisfied. Last year for some portrait work, I read the tests and decided to try a Zeiss, same focal length prime as my Nikon 80mm. It was a brilliant lens. It was manual focus but for me, that was not a problem. There was a difference to my eyes in both clarity and color. However, the auto exposure would also not work, altho it is supposed to, a feature I want/need. So it went back...

I got a Sigma 24~ 70 f/2.8 lens in preference to the Nikon lens. The front of the Nikon lens rotated while zooming/focussing. That became a PITA when using Polar filter, or VND Filters. The Sigma lens front did not rotate. Never regreted getting Sigma lenses, right up to the latest acquisition 150~600.C

Because I get great quality at half the cost. I would challenge you to tell me which brand lens was used to make any photo. The money I save is used for travel. This hummingbird image one of my favorites was shot on a less than 120 dollar mirror lens. Don't be fooled into thinking you need a thousand dollar lens to get great results.

I have Nikon D850 and Sony a7riii and I have mostly Sigma lens for Nikon and Adapter to use Sigma Lens on my Sony and I also have OEM lens for both cameras and I have found that the Sigma lens are much better lens then my OEM lens and when looking at my pictures you can tell if they were shot with Sigma are OEM lens and I have save a lot of money and if you just have to have OEM lens and you have the money it’s your money spend it your way.

Some lenses are better than others. Some third-party lenses are better than some OEM lenses. But also, some of the most popular lenses are filling a void in the OEM market - some of the most popular third party lenses are the 150 - 600mm telephotos, for example. Canon does not make anything like that, and if they did, it might be $10,000.

I'm considering a used OEM Sony 35mm prime for an A6300 and the only reason is for the OSS stabilization built into it since the camera doesn't have IBS. However with higher ISO and fast 3rd party lens, maybe it would be a consideration i.e. 3rd party lens with auto focus.
