What is the difference between Normal and Sport VR on the Nikon 200 to 500 mm f 5.6 lens? Thank you.

According to the instruction sheet, Normal is for Stationary objects, Sport is for Moving objects.

According to the sales person I bought the lens from, Normal works equally in all directions (up, down and side-to-side) while Sport is for when you are panning horizontally side-to-side, as when photographing an athletic event. The advantage of Sport (or Active on some lenses) is that there will be less cropping of the image if the vertical direction can be ignored. (I use only normal.)

I've used both for action, sports, birds in flight & couldn't tell any difference, so I now use 'Normal' for everything & find that it works great.

I was told that normal is for when the subject is moving and that active is for when you are moving . I just use normal because I could not see the difference , but then I am not a good photographer .

Look at it this way. If your hand holding on solid ground, use NORMAL. If your on a boat, train, or car where your body is moving while you shoot, use SPORT.

That is my understanding too. For instances, If you are taking a pic from a moving vehicle then use sport. If you are static then use normal. It seems the differences is more about whether you are moving or not than whether the subject is. Please someone correct me if I’m wrong.

"Sport mode limits vibration reduction to the minimum needed for subjects that are moving quickly and unpredictably.

Use the link I posted above to read Nikon's opinion on the subject.
