Why do folks buy third party lenses?

Why buy lenses from let’s say Tamron or Sigma, as opposed to OEM lenses from the camera manufacturer? Wouldn’t Nikon lenses for Nikon cameras or Canon lenses for Canon cameras, etc. be better in general than third party lenses?

If cost is the main issue, wouldn’t a used OEM lens in excellent condition be better in general than a new third party lens? I guess used third party lenses still beat out used OEM lenses cost wise.

I understand that Tamron and Sigma lenses are popular. Just curious as to why?

These lenses are usually less expensive.

Being less expensive does not mean of lesser quality.

Knowing what I learned in a seminar, I wouldn't think of anything but OEM glass for my cameras. Though, it is difficult to express OEM for my 4x5s.

Probably mostly economy. Although I bought Sigma 50-150 2.8 lenses for our Nikon and Fuji DX bodies, because no one was making anything with a similar range and aperture at the time. It’s now relatively old, and out of production, but still a rock-solid performer.

And that is how they started, offering stuff the 'big guys' did not. At first the quality was so-so 80/90s) but now I would be hard pressed to see any difference.

Yep, I remember in the ‘70’s having an older lens... may have been a Sigma.. literally fall apart in my hand.
Depends also on what level lens you buy- Sigma makes quite a range of quality.
So does Nikon.

$$$$ is the main reason and second, Sometimes the 3rd party makes lenses that the camera manufactures don't make. For instance, For e-mount there is no Sony 150-600mm that Sigma makes. The closest thing Sony makes is the price of a used car vs an economy ticket to Alaska.

For me cost is an important consideration.

My last purchase was a Tamron 18-400. Nikon does not have a lens with that range.

Tamron and Sigma lenses are less expensive that OEM lenses so cost is definitely a consideration for folks. But, it seems that in the last few years both Tamron and Sigma have brought to market some very high quality lenses.

I have a personal opinion that 99.9% of photographers and folks looking a photographs, will never be able to distinguish any difference in quality of images taken with either 3rd party lenses or OEM lenses.

And finally, for some it is simply bragging rights that they have OEM lenses.

My few cents worth.

Some of the Sigma ART series may out perform OEM lenses although, they may be a little more expensive.

And the third party lenses may totally meet the need of the photographer.
I have a Sigma 18-200 that lives on my camera.
