Since we adopted the tiny particle of a kitten who became Leaf, at six weeks or so, it was determined she would be an indoor cat exclusively, for her protection as well as that of our birds (even at that age she had the unmistakable instinct, reacting with pure lust when anything moved overhead). But recently she has been upgraded to a Cat Who Can Go Outside On a Harness. Here is the photographic evidence of her new adventure. She took to the harness without hesitation, without falling over sideways or walking backwards as cats generally do. Leaf's a natural, in all ways, in everything. And she's beautiful! And I'm glad she can go outside, because the photo ops are so much better.

(Now she's asleep in Ted's crate).

She is observing, gathering intelligence and plotting to one day "Leaf" that harness and you behind while she romps to her little feline heart's content.

Do you put bells on the harness to warn the birds that she's around and about?

"Observing, gathering intelligence and plotting" describes her perfectly. She's too smart for her (expanding) britches.

No, because that harness is connected to a Flexi-lead which is connected to a person. She's outside under the strictest supervision. Soon she'll be attached to a line stretched between a tree and a post--but always she'll have a human in the yard. This household has rescued/spayed/neutered/vaccinated many ferals who have always been returned to the neighborhood. No more. They kill and get killed, unnecessary destruction and heartache. I used to be a big proponent of Trap/Neuter/Release, but not now. I absolutely adore cats, but left to their own devices they are destructive. They need supervision!

Leaf acts like a bobcat, too. She's not actually new; she's been a fixture since last Thanksgiving, so she's probably over 10 months old now. But she is a treasure.

Good on you! I'm not a big fan of cats but I have rescued several over the years. I guess I'm a big softie, that's what my daughter calls me. I know how destructive they can be, just the natural way of cats and I don't hold it against them. The way you are doing it sounds like the smartest and most humane way to go.
I have seen a kind of hampster habitat only cat sized that lets cats have the run of the yard inside a wire runway that can go everywhere around the yard. Just limited by how much wire you are willing to buy, seems like a pretty good way to go too.

Very nice set, although my crew wonders how Ted is taking all this.

Leaf gets more beautiful every time you post her photos! She definitely looks like she is enjoying her outdoor adventures. Maybe she will join you and Ted on your hikes.

Hugs and kisses to Ted and Leaf. Thanks for sharing!!!

What i didn't mention is that for my other cat, Oliver, we bought and erected a greenhouse (more than $1000), plus he has an outdoor tunnel. I ferry him around to his habitats. At some point Leaf may join him but I am not the Decider in that arena.

Thank you for wondering! Ted is a very good soul and has survived many insults besides Leaf. She has become the charge of the other dog in this household, Chongo, a border collie/pit bull mix (who tolerates her with awesome transcendence). It's the one thing he and Chongo agree on. Ted does his best to roll his eyes when it comes to Leaf.

That look of rapt attention....! Though I agree with your reasoning about Leaf being essentially an indoor cat, she looks like she'd make an incredible outdoors guard cat. If you have a fence, or a gate, or maybe just an unused stake or something, you could even post a 'Beware! Guard Cat on Duty' sign.

Great lookin' Kitteh, Feral.

She won't be joining us on hikes. Ted would rather die. But even Ted agrees that Leaf is a stunner.

Leaf is lovely beyond dispute. With the (often senile) barking that goes on in this household, she doesn't need to post guard. When I watch Leaf respond to her world I sometimes feel as if I've taken on some form of monkey, or a wolverine. Leaf is definitely a child of Nature.
