Thanks Lupine, for M42 I used a Sigma 150-500mm telephoto on my Canon Rebel with a motorized mount to keep it centered..

Ah, I was wondering about the lack of star trails! :)

Yes, I can take a picture of stars without the drive mount but have to limit exposures to 15-20 seconds on a wide angle shot or I get trails...

Quite impressive. Have you been to the Dark Sky Park on the upper western shores near Mackinaw City? We went, but were driven out by the gnats. We need to try in cooler weather.

2MATO, I'm about 100 miles from Mackinaw on the shores of Lake Huron. There's not much light pollution here at all. Canada is 95 miles across the lake.
I know about those pesky gnats, I think they are sometimes called No-see-ums. Fall is my favorite time up here, no biting insects and lots of beautiful fall colors..Thanks for your reply

You are in a beautiful area! I grew up in Detroit and was an adult before I got to see the wonders north and into the country. Every six weeks or so, I head back 'home' for family and have learned to love all of the lakes. Each has its own personality, but that fantastic sky is above them all. My delight is the Blue Water Bridge at night.

Hi 2MATO, I grew up in Oakland County, then retired up here. I love this area except in the winter when the temps drop and the wind blows off the lake, Brrrr!!..It's nice as long as you don't have to go outside. Where are you now? Somewhere warm? Have a G'day, Wheezer

No such luck! I am in Syracuse, NY -Land O Snow and Wind. My Mom is still in Farmington Hills and I have a brother in Ann Arbor, so I am back there often. But I do still love Michigan - kids to Interlochen and hope my grands go there sometime - it is a beautiful state.

I'm sure Syracuse has a lot to offer too. Your not too far from Lake Ontario. I know Interlochen, my brother was a principal in a middle school near there and My parents lived south of Traverse City. Take care2MATO, and hurry back home to Michigan.
