Mostly, the birds have departed. The wildflowers too are fading. So I have been forced to look deeper and there are plenty of dragonflys to be found, if you look at the plants they prefer and the right heights. Looking higher and lower has brought new ones into view. Funny how most of them look tan or gray without the lens.

Great job, Katy!

A beautiful set of dragons and damsels Katy. Excellent lighting and detail. You have two of a female Western Pondhawk (Erythemis collocata), a female and two male Blue Dashers (Pachydiplax longipennis), a male Familiar Bluet (Enallagma civile) and a male Black Saddlebags (Tramea lacerata). Well done.

Thanks, Doc! I was hoping to hear from you and get help in the IDs. For some reason, it has become important to figure out their names.

Katy, I love photographing dragonflies as well. Very challenging and rewarding and it does not take long to learn the habits of different species, which will help you get beautiful shots. Just a tip, especially with the blue dasher (who I swear seems to love to be photographed), you will notice that he will keep returning to the same perch spot multiple times. If you think you missed the shot because he flew off, wait a few seconds and must likely he will come right back! This is great especially if you have a tripod set up or if you are sitting still in a comfortable spot. You will have lots of opportunities of getting the blue dasher at different angles without having to chase him around!
Katy, I love photographing dragonflies as well. Ve... (show quote)

Thanks for that tip, Lisa! I did notice some returning to the same spot again and again and some just gone. Now if I can remember which. Should be easy, I hope.

Thanks, rockdog! Keep repeating that! It it's true, I know. If you want to see nesting Clark's Grebes, get up the SNWR before Sept 10, when the loop closes.
