I format in camera. I have formatted the card while in my laptop, then put it in camera and format again.

I don’t format outside of the camera. I have always formatted memory cards in the camera where am using them. The act of formatting, deletes the existing files. If I use the card in a different camera, even a camera from the same manufacturer, I always format the card in the new camera. That may be too “belt and suspenders” for some of you folks, but I have not experienced memory card problems. Formatting takes me a couple of minutes max.

I think it's asking for trouble. As others have already said - format the card in camera - no other way.

How do Hoggers clear and format a memory card outside the camera?

For me, it has become muscle memory.

Import from card to Lightroom via reader, eject card, backup done automatically on computer of new images, card inserted in camera, low level format done in camera, repeat process after new images shot.

Don't know why I would need to do that as I use the memory card in my camera. I clear it using the camera.

I would format cards only in the camera where the card will be used. Any other approach could result in problems.

I never format in the camera, never format period unless the card is not working, which only happened once in 20+ years. Then I did format in camera, didn't work, low level format in computer, still didn't fix the card. Fast formatting is just erasing files, and whether you hit control A delete in your PC or do a quick "format" in the camera, it's all the same.

If you need a low level format in your hard drive, camera card or any drive, be prepared to toss the drive, meaning get all your data off the drive, because chances are close to 100% you will soon, or already have, lost access to your drive.

You must format your camera card just as often as you format your hard drive in your computer. (whens the last time you did that?) In Windows, which is pretty much just a virus, people (usually techs that don't give a damn about your data) often format the drive to reinstall the OS because is it so screwed up from all the bad software implementations it's the fastest, and easiest way to go. Your camera doesn't have that problem, it's OS is not on the card.

The quick format in your camera is not really a format, and is the same as deleting your files in your pc. Won't hurt or help anything.

If your camera has special files to put frames and other nonsense on your pictures that you never use, you can delete them and no harm will be done, other than lose the special effects you never once used, and free up some minuscule amount of probably unneeded space on the card.

Bottom line is do whatever makes you happy, makes no difference.

You shouldn't do it that way, I don't care what anyone says. Camera manufacturers recommend that memory cards should be formatted in the camera that they will be used in, period. I think they know better than I do. That is why they went to the trouble to put that ability in the camera menu. You do not need to worry about deleteing old files on your memory card, as they will be deleted during the format!

My laptop is apparently the same as my Nikon because I have formatted cards in the laptop and formatted the same ones in the camera and so far no problems either way. Also have taken new cards out of the package and stuck them in the camera and shot away. Camera must automatically format in that case as I don't.
I do mostly format in camera just to be sure.

Now I have heard here at UHH that you must "Reformat" your memory card in your Camera. Safer, more efficient, Clears card properly of all data,

It's none of the above in regards to formatting storage media. Formatting only sets the storage medium in a specific file format for compatibility. The most common file system is FAT 32 with FAT16 and exFAT as alternatives.

It was stated here already that camera companies do not have their own proprietary file system, otherwise your computers would not be able to read the card.

The manufacturer suggests you format "in camera" most likely due to technical issues and service calls from customers that do not understand how to format, and it's just easier for non-technical users of their devices.

Again, everyone is free to follow their own best practices, but saying "must" and "never" are simply just spreading misinformation about how file systems, not cameras, truly function.
