Never seen one with dark blotches on it and so much texture on the feathers...but I like it.
I agree, odd looking. Maybe she was just in a fight?

Could it be a young bird starting to get adult colors? Which types of hummers do you normally have in your area?
Or maybe it found some flowers growing in an old coal bucket.
A bit later I will put up a few shots of an oddly colored hummer that I got yesterday.
Here is one without minimal PP done. In our area we have 5 species and are near the migration routes of one or two more. Since it is August it is probably a young one coming into adult colors. I am making a wild guess mine is an Allen's because of all the brown - but what is with the red on the back of the head??? And it has scattered white patches - I think I am getting at least two or three of these in my yard now. 7DII, 100-400L hand held with fill flash at about 20 feet.

We have Ruby-throated hummingbirds.

We don't have those on the left coast.
But I understand they are spreading and have tentative spottings in NM and CO.
A birder group has ID'd mine as a juvie Rufous. I am on the north edge of their wintering zone, in their migration zone and just a few miles west of me there is a small "year round" enclave on the coast in Orange County. And the little darlings do fly.
