Has anybody flown on an American Airlines ERJ145 and ERJ175 lately (I mean like last 4 to 6 months)? I have heard new Federal regulations for these size aircraft are no longer allowing two carry on bags, just one "personal" item. I have used a ThinkTank Airport Advantage for years and not had any problems in that is fits under the seat. But a friend flew United on a ERJ145 two weeks ago and they where Gate checking "anything" with wheels regardless if it fit under the seat or not and where allowing only one personal item. He ended up pulling out most of his stuff and cramming it in his pockets and then exchanging the contents of his backpack with the Advantage. I have a trip coming up and it is all on ERJ145 and ERJ175 planes and will be taking a D850 (24-70/f2.8, 70-200 & 500) and Z7 (14-30, 28-70 f2.8 & 35 f 1.8). If this happening then I will rethink my packing and what I will take.

Thanks

The magic words are "This bag contains electronics with batteries and fits under the seat."

They are one subsidiary. Piedmont is a profit sharing partner with AA and has a large portion of the business in and out of Charlotte depending on destination.

And as of 01 August when I flew Piedmont/AA on the ERJ145, there were very few people that had to check their luggage. My Vanguard backpack was never looked at twice for this consideration, and it's pretty bulky as it carries two bodies, several lenses, and my laptop and all accessories.

American Eagle, American's regional service, consisted of something like 7 small airlines, including Piedmont. For business purposes they have consolidated under the name Envoy.

Envoy Air (formerly American Eagle Airlines) is the only subsidiary entirely owned by AA. But you are correct in that Envoy and the other (non-owned) subsidiaries do fly under American Eagle brand.

We took advantage of Space-A for years from Dover to Rota, Spain and back. The last time we took that flight, the plane heading for Dover kept having "issues" on the tarmac in Spain, so we had to fly a KC-135 to Pittsburgh, rent a car and drive to Dover to get our car. Still thousands cheaper than commercial, and you can take whatever you want on board within safety limitations.

Do you have to be retired or active military to use Space-A ?

Space-A is for both active duty and retired service members. Although I am retired now, I haven't used it since I was active duty, so I'm not sure how the waiting lists work on this side. I do know it is free for both active and retired along with their dependents. It's a gamble on availability, so if you have some place you MUST be by a specific time, I wouldn't suggest it. But if you have no time commitments, it's a great way to travel pretty much around the world.

Thank you John,
I guess this leaves me out since I am not a retired or active military, my father is a WWII and Korean vet thought. It sounds like a nice option, I was checking the web site and it seems it is for military personal only.

I would check and see what class your friend was flying on United. They have a "Basic Economy" that allows NO baggage in the cabin except for one "personal" item FOR THAT CLASS ONLY. Not an FAA reg, but a way that United (and perhaps other carriers as well) lures you in with a super cheap flight, only to make you pay additional bucks for additional services - and hefty fees for ANY baggage you bring with you. Other classes of service with United allow carry-ons, and don't charge for seat choice. My suggestion with United is pay more up front and a lot less total than by going "Basic".

This comment is correct, and applies to all the major airlines that have multiple classes.
