Flying on American ERJ 145 and ERJ175

Has anybody flown on an American Airlines ERJ145 and ERJ175 lately (I mean like last 4 to 6 months)? I have heard new Federal regulations for these size aircraft are no longer allowing two carry on bags, just one "personal" item. I have used a ThinkTank Airport Advantage for years and not had any problems in that is fits under the seat. But a friend flew United on a ERJ145 two weeks ago and they where Gate checking "anything" with wheels regardless if it fit under the seat or not and where allowing only one personal item. He ended up pulling out most of his stuff and cramming it in his pockets and then exchanging the contents of his backpack with the Advantage. I have a trip coming up and it is all on ERJ145 and ERJ175 planes and will be taking a D850 (24-70/f2.8, 70-200 & 500) and Z7 (14-30, 28-70 f2.8 & 35 f 1.8). If this happening then I will rethink my packing and what I will take.

Thanks

Contact American.
It’s always best to go to the source rather than making plans based on misleading rumors.

I just recently flew AA from Mobile to Charlotte on an ERJ145. I carried on my Vanguard Alta Rise 48 with no issues at all. I was worried that I may have to check it due to it's size. After round-trip on six separate flights, I was not asked once to check it.

Hope that helps!

Bob;
rjaywallace told you correctly. Contact American and find out for sure. I flew on this jet in Febuary with two carry on's. No problem. I have seen airports, not many, that the size limit is a bit smaller than where you came from. Again, check with the American web site and then CALL them to be sure of any latest changes.

I would check and see what class your friend was flying on United. They have a "Basic Economy" that allows NO baggage in the cabin except for one "personal" item FOR THAT CLASS ONLY. Not an FAA reg, but a way that United (and perhaps other carriers as well) lures you in with a super cheap flight, only to make you pay additional bucks for additional services - and hefty fees for ANY baggage you bring with you. Other classes of service with United allow carry-ons, and don't charge for seat choice. My suggestion with United is pay more up front and a lot less total than by going "Basic".

you are so right. Three years ago my lady friend got a 'cheap deal' from DFW to Tampa with United airlines. I always use American airlines. But that trip was total mess. I will not use another airline unless American is not an option. She got sucked in because it was 'cheap'. I have called American twice this past year to verify baggage size limits from DFW to the places I went. Never a problem. Stick with American if you can. Their web site provides the baggage limits but for these two models of planes, he should call the make sure.

I don't recall any airline allowing two carry-on bags ever. One carry-on that will fit in the overhead bin, one smaller personal item like a daybag or purse or computer bag that will fit under the seat in front of you. But beware - many airlines are now advertising as their base price for a seat a ticket with NO carry-on bag privilege. At $35 or even $50 per bag each way that makes the round-trip ticket much higher than they advertise.

When ever I have a question concerning my equipment, I always call the airline. They have always been able to answer my questions, they have the most up to date information.

You need to contact Envoy Air ( https://www.envoyair.com/ ). They are the American Airlines subsidiary that flies the Embraer Regional Jet 145 and 175. It's a safe bet that their carry-on requirements differ from AA's since they are operating smaller planes. They don't show requirements on their website that I could see so a call or e-mail would be in order.
BTW, AA's site shows 1 carry-on and 1 personal item, not 2 carry-ons. The biggest difference will be size and possibly weight of the carry-on. On a trip to Bora Bora we flew Air Tahiti to Tahiti and then the regional carrier for the 45 min flight to Bora Bora. Not only was there a big difference in size allowance but weight of the carry-on was restricted to something like 7lbs, and they checked.

Yeah, but the flight attendants are ugly, the food sucks, and it takes forever to pre-flight.

They are one subsidiary. Piedmont is a profit sharing partner with AA and has a large portion of the business in and out of Charlotte depending on destination.

And as of 01 August when I flew Piedmont/AA on the ERJ145, there were very few people that had to check their luggage. My Vanguard backpack was never looked at twice for this consideration, and it's pretty bulky as it carries two bodies, several lenses, and my laptop and all accessories.

And yeah, many times you get bumped for a helicopter motor or a dozen...

I flew American with the cheapest ticket they sell 2 months ago. My seat assignments were crappy and on my return flight they cancelled the 2nd leg of my flight and notified me of that 10 minutes before I landed at the airport. And rebooked me on another flight for 36 hours later (which I was able to rebook sooner). But I was able to carry on 2 bags- one under the seat and on in the compartment above :)
Needless to say American will be my last choice next time around.

We took advantage of Space-A for years from Dover to Rota, Spain and back. The last time we took that flight, the plane heading for Dover kept having "issues" on the tarmac in Spain, so we had to fly a KC-135 to Pittsburgh, rent a car and drive to Dover to get our car. Still thousands cheaper than commercial, and you can take whatever you want on board within safety limitations.
