trying to decide between the new Sigma sport 70-200 f/2.8 and the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 new version . Have heard that the Tamron is the sharper of the two with better vibration reduction or O.S. Can someone help me with my decision ?

I bought the Tamron about 9 months ago based on the ratings in DxOMark.com and other reviews. It was at the top of the sharpness list at the time and Tamron's VR technology is as good as any. It is an excellent lens and it is serving me well on both my D800 and D850. My recommendation based on owning Nikon, Tamron, and Sigma glass is IF you are willing to test the AF of your lens and tune it if needs tuning (Tamron Tap-In or Sigma USB-Dock), then you can save some money with the 3rd party glass. If you are not interested in checking then tuning, buy the Nikon glass, which is basically equivalent to the Tamron, except for the price.

Well, you should be doing a focus test/calibration with whatever you get - all the reviews I have seen favor the Sigma - so, flip a coin maybe ??

I've been well pleased with my Nikon version of the Tamron 70-200 G2 lens. Yes it took some fine tuning with the Tap-In console, but it was well worth the effort. I cant compare it to the Sigma, other then the online reviews that seem to indicate the Tamron is sharper with better VR than the Sigma, but once again, no first hand experience with the Sigma. For the money, the Tamron is an AWESOME lens.

Most of the reviews comparing the Tamron and Sigma were comparing the G2 version vs. the APO version of the Sigma. Since the recent release of the Sigma Sport version, most reviews have it as the leader, even over the Nikon by some. In reality, all three are probably excellent lenses. I just purchased the Sigma with the recent sale they had. It is very sharp corner to corner. The major grip is that it is heavy. It is but I was out for a couple of hours the other day shooting wildlife and I found its weight no problem.

Most of the reviews comparing the Tamron and Sigma... (show quote)

Of course, any lens with corner-to-corner sharpness will be heavy.

What do you shoot? Landscapes, sports, events? Some things depend on the speed of focus acquisition more than "sharpness" once focus is captured. A lens can be "sharper" in a static situation but be slower when getting focus. So first decide what the task is and then choose the tool accordingly.

I have read that even Nikon (and Canon) have variations in manufacturing where some pieces do well without tuning, some don't.

I bought the Sigma contemporary instead of the Sport model because I really didn't need the weather proofing and all the reviews said that that was about the only difference. I have a Canon and maybe the Sigma performs differently on a Nikon mount. Most of the reviews I read favored the Sigma for sharpness and overall performance. The other sales point was the dock for Sigma and I didn't think the Tamron had one, but I am not sure. I have not had to purchase the dock because mine is fine from the manufacture. I have been very satisfied with my Sigma. You probably would be happy with either.

Generally speaking I prefer Sigma ART and SPORT lenses to anything Tamron. Just my opinion. I own neither as I am blown away by my Nikon 70-200/2.8E FL! Best of luck.
