If you are In the Catskill Region of New York State, you must realize that the entire area is well patrolled by the New York State Police and ,as I recall, there are also many town police and security services. I have relatives living in Sullivan and Ulster Counties and I visit frequently. Route 17, 52 and the Throughway are crawling with cruisers. The area is well policed and I am sure there is sufficient personnel to investigate a theft. Accident management and investigations are handled by uniformed officers in the traffic division. Once reported, usually detectives carry on the investigation.
The longer you wait to report, the less chance you will have for recovery.
What's the use of paying any insurance premiums if you can't make a legitimate claim when you suffer a loss.

I'm in Denver, Colorado, which is a whole different ballpark. I agree about the insurance, but because of the age and value of the camera, they won't cover it all.

Yes, it is a large, well-known flooring company – but they hire another company to do the installation. The guy that did not return had been talking about some of my photos on the walls and said he liked to take pictures, so I'm sure he's the one that took it.
This is a secure condo building, so no one else could have gotten in except those two that I let in.
So why aren't you pursuing this with the flooring company or installation company? You are being so passive, I can't believe it.

So you are just gonna let the asshole get away with it??? They don't have an address for this clown? I'm sure the police don't want to get involved. I've dealt with them before when my place was robbed.
You can get yourself shot these days "confronting" someone...and as you said (I agree from experience as well), recovering stolen goods/arresting perpetrator(s) is about a 1 on a 1-10 scale-of-importance to the police. My wife "lost" a $10k piece of heirloom jewelry to a "professional" dog walker (no way to "prove" she did it), and there is little you can do other than file a police report and deal with the insurance company. You still don't have the objects that were stolen… Sucks.
I hope the OP gets a replacement camera sooner rather than later.

Tell him brother Hogger, you are so right. OP, you should have jumped in this immediately after calling the police. I am not accusing you of whining to us, but please take some action and let us all know how it works out.
Hello Sir! I have sent you a private message.
Catskills? Denver, Colorado is not in the Catskills.

What? You didn't get the memo?
I had a similar experience a few years ago with one of those TV flooring companies. They came late but finished the entire job by 9 PM. That was the only thing I gigged them on, start time should be like 8 AM, not 11.
Anyhoo, a few days later I start looking for my macro lens and couldn't find it. I immediately thought that one of the 3 workers helped himself to it. I checked all my normal places I put things - my closet, the hallway bench leading to the garage, my area in the living room, the kitchen exit as I often took the camera into the backyard. I was beside myself and was close to calling the company and lodging a complaint.
BUT I took one more look at all my places (yeah, my wife says I should keep things in their place) and found it behind my folding reflector on the top shelf of my closet. I am so glad I didn't make that call.

I had photography gear stolen during a burglary. It was 30 years or so ago so things may have changed. It turned out my insurance paid for all new gear to replace what was stolen. The insurance rate did not go up due to one claim. You may have already checked but don't just assume they will only pay a small percentage or raise the rates. Also, file a police report immediately and be sure the flooring company is aware, if nothing else than to be a good citizen and perhaps save a future victim from this guy.
If you have home owners insurance most likely your stolen camera gear was insured. Check into it. And talk to who sent these guys to your house, They must have their names and addresses. Good luck.

I don't get you. Why are you so passive about this? You call the police and make excuses why they can't do anything. Did you actually file a report or did they dissuade you from that? You know it was one of the two guys--don't you? You don't call the guy's employer and we don't know why? I'm in the construction business. Did you hire two guys off the street? Is there another reason you are not pursuing the right remedies here? And now your insurance. It is a universal misunderstanding that any claim against insurance will increase your future insurance costs. This is not so. It may or may not. So far, I have had some major insurance claims and my rates were not increased. And, from a strictly economic analysis; your insurance reimbursement will cover your out of pocket 'possible insurance increase' for a number of years. You have insurance for just this reason. What are you waiting for? While I feel empathy for you; I am less than pleased with the hapless and resourceless victim you proffer.

"Sooo, now it's time to get a new one." WTF! What ever happened to;
Sooo, now it's time to report that pair of toe rags to the authorities?

LOL. bit hard to use it when it's disassembled, or do you just pass
an oily rag lovingly over its exterior?
Different, but kinda the same; my grand father saw some Jehovah Witnesses
coming up his drive, so he answered the front door naked... I guess that's
showing them his 45 lol.

Homeowner's, Renter's and comprehensive automobile insurance are all possibilities. Definitely report the theft.

Crikey bud, just hand it over to the cops and they'l have the bastards
in custody in no time, and your insurance will gladly pay up.
By the way, is the flooring laid, and is the flooring and labour cost
any where near the value of your loss?
If the flooring is $10,000 and your loss is $8000; and you havnt handed
over any cash, quid pro quo.
LOL
