RWebb, thanks for 'warning me' about the frequently crowded conditions. My goal, without even seeing if conditions contribute to such "story line", is to make a video/slide presentation that shows the strong beginnings and present practices of Christianity.

Well certainly Christianity is one religion there. But keep in mind there are a lot of variations on that religion as well as a broad spectrum of Judaism and Islam. Christians do not even agree on exactly where Christ was crucified. The interactions amongst these peoples is fascinating. Spend some time in the Old City and this will become apparent. We certainly found that our Jewish guide knew more about Christianityin Israel than we could ever know. Do not miss the Holocaust Museum....when East Germany fell many of their archives, including video, were transferred to this museum.

My Prime lens suggestion would be my newest acquisition, the EF-S 24mm f2.8 pancake. For indoors, pump your ISO a couple of stops to get a great capture. It is 6 Oz. and about 1/2 inch long, just shorter than my 77D Prism (Penta-mirror) overhang.

This is a stealthy and light rig that gives a 39mm FF equivalent view and serves as a "wide normal" field of view. I carry this across my chest and it is almost like it is not there. Good lens, great reviews and close focusing. No IS, so be sure to use a fast shutter speed. For this focal length I use something faster than 1/125th sec. I'd be interested if for some of your trip, you actually just "walked around" with the small prime. If you like longer field of view, there is a 40mm 2.8 version. These lenses cost less than $150.

Have a wonderful and meaningful trip.

Israel is one of the most interesting places I have visited; I was there two years ago. I went on several guided and non guided tours in order to see as much of the country as I could. If you are going with a Church group, they have probably already organized what you will see. As many have said here, you will find a fast wide zoon or prime much more useful. Everyone who takes a tour ends up in Jerusalem. It is very old, dark city. To get to the Church of the Holy sepluchre, you need to walk down quite of few streets of traders. The Church itself was hard for me to photograph in, as I was using a 5 d mk iv with the 16-35 f4 lens. The image stabilization was great, but still there were quite a few spots where I had wished i had brought my 2.8 III version of the lens. The Same was true when we visited the sites along the "historic Christian" area -- Nazareth, the Sea of Galilelee and quite a few other Biblical spots.. I had a Sony rx100 v to get a few longer shots, but rarely used it for that purpose; I don't know if I would use the v6 more since it has the longer reach. The Canon 10-22 f3.5-4.5 might be a good lens to take along with Tamron. It is wide and bright and will allow you to get a lot of special photos that would be hard with the longer lens.

In any case, have fun.

I shoot Nikon. In Israel and Egypt I used a Dx camera with an 18-200 outside. I would have rarely if ever used anything beyond the 200. I generally only used the 200 to generate a sense of compression. Once I walked over a threshold into a church or museum, I changed to a 50 1.4 Lens. Many of my favorite shots were inside. For Dx, I would get the highest quality zoom lens between 10-150, like the 18-135, that I could afford. I would also take a fast prime, either 35 or 50 with an fstop between 1.4-1.8.
