I think most of you re missing a simple answer here. I have a similar problem but not with Photo but with the file explorer. I suspect that the new codec for reading Canon RAW files may be buggy.

My IT specialist's advice in questions of this kind is always: "Clear the Cache."

Do you run CCleaner or Malwarebytes? I've been using them for years. See if you have an onboard option to clear the cache. If not, try one (or both) of those two programs. They have free and paid versions of each.

I don't use a Canon camera. I use Sony. The Sony RAW program comes up when I hit "Open with..." and I can either process with that or open the file in PSE. Sony's program and PSE 18 work fine. Windows' "Photos" program is the one that crashes when I do anything other than view a RAW file. When I try to magnify it and/or go back to the main menu is when it stops working. Can to transfer my photos to Organizer and set it up where Photos doesn't even open when I put an SD card in the computer?

I went to "settings" in Photos (only option as edit is a manipulation function) and didn't see anything about memory allocation. I've always been able to open a RAW file in PSE (starts in Sony's Camera RAW program) and JPGs in Photos. I only have a laptop because I have no physical space in which to put a tower, although maybe if I removed my flightsim yoke and pedals I might be able to get an all-in-one on or under my desk. I'd love a bigger screen (17" currently) or a 4k output to my TV, but as I recently spent over a month's pay for my new lens a new computer will have to wait. I suppose I could put all my pics in Organizer, though and never use Photos again.

That option is in PSE, not Photos.

I just got back from Oshkosh a couple days ago and have been going through my pics - first 5 on my FB page now (Albums, Oshkosh '19). Seems like every time I open a RAW file (with the exception of just viewing it) the program shuts down completely and I have to go back and restart it. SUPER FRUSTRATING! I have Elements and Organizer 18 but I haven't yet tried to experiment with Organizer - regularly use elements. I never have any problem with JPG images. Any suggestions other than buying a new expensive fancy computer?

Windows 10 and its Photos app does not, out of the box, support RAW. There's a "codec" that you can install to give you RAW capability. I found many sites on this subject with a quick Google search. Here's one:

Or else, install a RAW-handling program of your choosing.

The best system to perform "PP" is a desktop system - a laptop system can 'do' in an "emergency", but routine use is best performed with a desktop ..... which is expanded so much more easily.

I do all my processing on a laptop, with desk monitor and keyboard. I would agree that a desktop would perform better (less heat build up, etc.) but I doubt that the laptop is the source of the OP's problem. 90,000 photos and counting, and still ok on a laptop.

Wondering why you don't open the images in PSE? Why when you have a much better program you are using Photos? I've never used Photos except just to review. Organizer is much better. Have used PSE since version 1. I work from a laptop with a 17" screen, only 8 GB, I7, 1TB HD. No problems with RAW.

While in this case is the OP does have a laptop, many of us still have desktops with large monitors because of the added flexibility and power. I live and travel full time in an RV, so desktop is pretty much out of the question for me at this time. That's one of the things I look forward to when we finally settle down somewhere is a large monitor.

I'm not so sure about that. I've seen many desktops with much less expandability than my laptop. In general I would agree that a good desktop should be more expandable than a laptop. However, that is not always the case. I have a docking station with a regular monitor attached and can use an attached keyboard if I choose but I happen to prefer my Lenovo laptop keyboard. I have it configured for dual monitors.

However, I suspect that the OP's real problem is the codecs. I installed the MS codec for viewing raw files when I got my Nikon and have not had issues viewing my raw files since. I would recommend reinstalling if it was previously installed but is no longer working.

Best of luck.

PS: I've upgraded memory (RAM) and my hard drive to a larger SSD and can upgrade to a larger SSD if I choose, just like on a desktop. I do have an NVIDIA graphics card on board. I have usb AND network drives (NAS) for backup on multiple drives. Never trust ONLY one drive for storage.

OK. I went to settings and made the preference to view pics in Elements instead of Photos. Do I need to/should I transfer all my pics to Organizer (Which I've never used before, but have watched one or two YouTube videos about)? What will happen to them?
