I just got back from Oshkosh a couple days ago and have been going through my pics - first 5 on my FB page now (Albums, Oshkosh '19). Seems like every time I open a RAW file (with the exception of just viewing it) the program shuts down completely and I have to go back and restart it. SUPER FRUSTRATING! I have Elements and Organizer 18 but I haven't yet tried to experiment with Organizer - regularly use elements. I never have any problem with JPG images. Any suggestions other than buying a new expensive fancy computer?

As I mentioned, "I never have any problem with JPG images." Adding memory might be possible (RAM) but I'd have to check the instruction manual (if I still have it) and find the access door.

Not an access door. You have to open it up and expose the guts of the computer.

Well, I recently looked at the system configuration or whatever it's called and found that I already have the maximum of 16 GB or RAM. I have an HP laptop.

16 GIG should be plenty to be able to open up RAW. I do it all the time with my 4 GIG machine, It's also an HP. Perhaps you need to reinstall the RAW software. You may not have the latest upgrade.

I take all my pictures in RAW then cull out the ones I don't really like and save them in JPeg.

Check the amount of memory allocated for use: click "Edit"/scroll down to and click "preferences". You may adjust the amount of memory used. I have PSE 11 that is hardly used, but it is also a setting in Photoshop CC 2019.

Another suggestion is to close all other programs while processing RAW files.

Maybe this will help,
Mark

Not really enough info, is the problem with photo's? or elements and organizer?, if Photo's do you have the codec for your RAW files? have you tried the software that came with your camera to view/convert the files?

While in this case is the OP does have a laptop, many of us still have desktops with large monitors because of the added flexibility and power. Laptops have limited expandability, limited video functionality, limited hard drive capacity, limited connectivity, small incomplete keyboards, and limited screen size. Don't get me wrong, laptops are wonderful things. But, I virtually never use a laptop at home, only when away on business or vacation.

Could you have a bad install of Elements? When you open a raw file, PS is going to run Adobe Camera Raw to process it. Maybe that is missing or bad? I would check with Adobe support on this one.

I went to "settings" in Photos (only option as edit is a manipulation function) and didn't see anything about memory allocation. I've always been able to open a RAW file in PSE (starts in Sony's Camera RAW program) and JPGs in Photos. I only have a laptop because I have no physical space in which to put a tower, although maybe if I removed my flightsim yoke and pedals I might be able to get an all-in-one on or under my desk. I'd love a bigger screen (17" currently) or a 4k output to my TV, but as I recently spent over a month's pay for my new lens a new computer will have to wait. I suppose I could put all my pics in Organizer, though and never use Photos again.

The best system to perform "PP" is a desktop system - a laptop system can 'do' in an "emergency", but routine use is best performed with a desktop ..... which is expanded so much more easily.
