Nikon has in the past used Sony chips in their camera's. However, the latest news is that Nikon is/has developed it's own chip for use.
When you say things like "Sony rebranded" you are implying that the camera is basically a Sony with the Nikon name on it, and this is, totally fake news. Nikon makes their own camera's. In the past they have used Sony chips only, but this has, as I said, changing.

Sony and Toshiba sensors (D7100/7200 had Toshiba, not that it really matters).

If I was to have an issue with my Z6 that I purchased from Amazon, I would call Nikon, not Amazon. I would do the same if I bought it from B&H.

Wait two years and get an even better version of the A7R, at a higher price.

That is how Sony operates - make a small step forward, issue a new camera, but continue the older ones, each a step further down in price. This does work for them.

Do you own any Sony cameras to make such a Ridiculous statement Sir?

Why all the negativity towards Sony. They along with Canon and others were suppliers of high end TV and video production for years. My playback decks for corp show AV company were Sony's. They have been selling pro equipment for years. I a Nikon fan for years lonely saw Nikon cameras for Pro work and some
optical offerings. Sony has been leading the last few years. I have had and now have a lot of their cameras and a camcorder. Nikon and Canon have been out marketed by Sony.

Over the past five years, Sony has done more to push digital imaging forward than just about anybody else. But their incredible pace of innovation is straining an industry that just can’t keep up, and the cracks are starting to show.
Earlier this week, Sony released yet another a7 camera. It’s the fourth a7R Sony has made in less than 6 years, and the 10th full-frame mirrorless camera it’s released over the same period—all while adding 7 more cameras to its APS-C E-Mount system, debuting the G Master line of high-end lenses, and dominating the compact camera space with the RX series. Oh, and we might be adding the long-rumored a7000 and a7S III to that list by year end.
Backed by the R&D of their image sensor division and the might of the Sony Corporation’s pocket book, Sony has done more, innovated faster, and marketed better. As a result, they can be credited with forcing Nikon and Canon to dive into full-frame mirrorless, spearheading revolutionary technologies like Eye Autofocus, turning sports photography upside down with the release of the 20fps Sony a9, and wooing a huge number of YouTube creators with the a7s II and a7 III.
In short: Sony is currently the driver of innovation in the photo industry.
They did this by bringing the annual refresh cycle of consumer electronics over to digital imaging, where only compact cameras used to be updated yearly (you know, before they died a gruesome death at the hands of smartphone manufacturers). Laptops are refreshed every year. Smartphones are refreshed every year. You can expect a new model of Sony’s TVs every year. So Sony took a similar approach with cameras, releasing new full-frame mirrorless cameras almost every year since the first a7 and a7R debuted in 2013.
But if Sony’s innovation has been a boon for an industry that might have otherwise fallen asleep at the wheel, this shortening of the research and development cycle is threatening to destroying it.
As a brand that includes a movie studio, record label, several consumer electronics divisions, a sensor division and, yes, a digital imaging division, Sony can afford to spend a lot more money than the likes of Leica, Fujifilm, Nikon, or even Canon. So far, this has been a force for good. Innovation begetting competition that inspires innovation.
But what happens when companies with a rich imaging heritage can no longer keep up?
As consumers come to expect more, better, faster cameras and lenses every year, it pushes companies to choose between bad options.
1. Release half-baked products by rushing ideas to market
2. Start a race to the bottom, drastically cutting prices (and features) in the hopes of building brand loyalty
3. Lean too heavily on high-end, expensive or luxury products because they offer the best margins
Each company is taking this challenge on differently. Canon already announced that they would spend less on their consumer division, Fujifilm dived into medium format while its Instax products (thankfully) continue to keep the lights on, Leica is partnering with phone makers and cutting jobs, and Nikon has already offered steep discounts on both the Z6 and Z7 after reporting that revenue dropped nearly 18% year-over-year.
Maybe I’m just a pessimist masquerading as a realist, but Sony’s rapidly rising star in the photo world gives me pause.
Because these companies have something Sony doesn’t: heritage. They understand imaging in a way that Sony doesn’t, and Sony might just bury them anyhow because it understands marketing and consumer electronics in a way that these older companies are only just starting to grasp.
This shows in all of the ways that Sony is typically criticized by the photo community. Their lackluster color science, usability issue both in terms of ergonomics and the menu system, and anecdotally the worst customer service for photography pros are all examples of how Sony is a consumer electronics company first, and why they often don’t get the details right until the third or fourth iteration of a camera.
They understand technology and consumer trends better than Nikon, Canon, or any of the more “traditional” camera companies. They understand specs, they understand marketing, and they certainly understand sensors, but they don’t understand photography and photographers as well. As a result, they’ve created incredibly powerful cameras and quickly gained market share, but those cameras tend to lack exactly where you would expect them to.
Competition is good. Innovation is good. But if the Sony Alpha machine keeps forcing Nikon and Canon to cut costs and shift focus away from the camera and lens markets, Sony will turn from the engine of innovation and competition in our industry, to the only game in town.

It is fine for Sony to release a new camera every year - but I don't need to purchase a new camera every year. I am now retired, but for many years I was a software developer. Even at the height of my career, I made no attempt to purchase the most modern up-to-the-second computer; one that could do what I needed to do was adequate. We purchased a Win3.1 computer in 1987, a Win95 computer in 1995, a Win2K computer in 2000, ...

Here you go again with your anti-sony BS. Get with the reality of today. The reality is Sony is the world's #1 producer of digital image sensors. These Sony image sensors are used in cameras from Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic as well as Sony and the majority of cellphones. Sony sells more fullframe cameras (DSLR or Mirrorless) than any other camera maker. And their A7III is the single best selling FF camera in the world. Pros and amateur photographers alike have taken advantage of the great pro-quality cameras from Sony and use them for everything from news coverage , sports, wildlife, portraits, fashion, weddings, events, studio work, everything. You are living in the past if you think Sony is just an electronics company. While you rant against Sony at every chance, photographers are making stunning photos with their gear under a variety of conditions. And "traditional" camera companies like Nikon, and Canon are scrambling to catch up with mixed success. Keep spouting your falsehoods and keep living in your fantasy world, but the rest of us know the reality and embrace all the latest from all top camera makers, Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus and more.

I am a Nikon user and have been since the film days. And while I have no intention of switching brands I think I would have to be blind not to recognize the advancements Sony is making. Every industry needs someone to push the limits. Otherwise the competition just sit on their laurels.

My biggest complaint with Sony is some of their over top cheer leaders, but the company has no control over that. When Tony and Chelsea had an issue with a preproduction Nikon Z it was plastered all over the place. Same happened to the same duo very recently with the newest Sony, and they had to borrow a camera. Not a peep about it from the Sony cheerleaders.

Every time there is a new advancement there are those who are very vocal about how unnecessary it is, while others are chomping at the bit to get it. The reasons are varied from financial to not wanting to feel like a guinea pig, with a myriad of reasons in between. If it wasn't for the guinea pigs we'd all still be shooting film.

So go get'm Sony! I'll watch this one from the sidelines.

How do the Sony cameras, (or perhaps you are referring to just the A7 line) have actual unusabilty? That statement confuses me. I have an A6300 and it is very usable. I have a friend who has an A7RIII and he loves it.

Hiya ladies & gentlemen,

I have absolutely NO connection to Sony Corp. other than as a Customer of their products, starting with my purchase of a Sony reel to reel tape recorder in 1964 at the Northern Greenland Air Base in Thule, Greenland, as an American G.I.!

This many years later, I've purchased two Sony Digital Cameras, in recent years.

To my surprise, I learned yesterday in an Email from Sony they have announced their NEW Digital Camera Upgrade of the A7R series of cameras. They've surpassed their A7R III with their announcement of their Brand New A7R IV ((( 61 Megapixel ))) digital camera. Pull up B&H Photo.com's PAGE on the Sony A7R IV and click on the MORE INFO computer prompt about the A7R IV to read about the INCREASED ADVANTAGES of this brand new A7R series camera over the previous TWO! It is beyond description in so few words.

I was gobsmacked, to put it bluntly! I thought it would take them at least TWO more years to put their 2017 Award Winning A7R III into the dust-bin of has-beens! But apparently NOT!

Thankfully, their new camera will STILL WORK with the older lenses from the A7R II and their A7R III, cameras, because all three of them are FULL FRAME SENSOR CAMERAS! Lenses from Crop Sensor cameras do not work properly with FULL FRAME SENSOR cameras.

I quit dealing with Amazon because of their INFERIOR STAFF members who cannot carry on a credible conversation about basically ANY QUESTIONS or ISSUES regarding products. While I am 'sure' they wish to, they cannot .... simply because they do NOT understand basic American English or our normal line of thought!

Having said that, I freely admit ... I am an EX-Army Intelligence Linguist who worked Two Tours against the Russians in Europe. I 'KNOW' about communicating in a Foreign Language!

And I also KNOW about how important it IS for those who attempt to speak in a language they have little to now basic skills in their NEW language they are attempting to use!

I switched to B&H Photo dot com for ALL my Camera needs and questions regarding sales, buys and Technical Questions about what will and won't work with specific camera issues, I want to solve.

I cannot begin to adequately explain how pleased I am to have found B&H photo! I have been a resident of TEXAS since 1957 and still live there. Needless to say, having found a New York City source for my camera needs is BEYOND my scope of experience. Considering my past experience in camera technical needs!

Other than being a happy customer of B&H camera, I have NO connection, let alone FINANCIAL connection to B&H Camera with the exception of BUYING 'stuff' from them!

I've found that John P. in their Email Section at johnp@ghphoto.com is 'invaluable' in dealing with Technical Questions in regards to Digital Cameras. He is an old fart like me. I am however his ELDER! For a 'kid' (joking) he isn't half bad! ;-)

note: I found out after calling B&H Photo yesterday (after receiving Sony's Email regarding their NEW A7R series camera) that I can SELL B&H photo my A7R III and use the Trade In amount as a down-payment on my NEW A7R IV when it debuts in September!

YOU also CAN TRADE IN OLDER CAMERAS as a down payment on the sensational A7R IV digital camera with 61 megapixels photos - along with a VAST AMOUNT of INTERNAL UPGRADES like its NEWLY ENGINEERED BODY that is their "most environmentally secure/sealed digital cameras they produce! Resistant to rain & dust better than any of their other cameras.

B&H is selling this camera for $3,500.00, for the Body Only. If you ALREADY have a Sony A7R series camera, ALL your lenses will WORK with this camera. (that was my major question)

And you can INQUIRE from their Trade-In Dept. as to how much you can get for your OLDER Digital Cameras as Trade-Ins for this new camera purchase.

IF you do NOT ask, you won't know.

Scooter,

PS: like I said go to B&H photo and download their article about this camera and read all the specs about what has been upgraded from the older A7R series of cameras, to realize WHAT A GREAT DEAL IT IS!

First off My Sony a99II with 41+ MP does all that I have ever wanted to do.
Second is the doubt that the lenses today don't have the glass to do 61 MP justness.
What I have now fits my needs.
I also have Sony's RX-10 IV which gives me a little more zoom then the my 28 to 300 mm on my a99ii.

I bought a new car this year only because of the new safety features not just because it's alluringly pretty.

The A7Riv news is nearly a week old. They also announced ( or hinted ) at 2 more releases this year - possibly an update to the high ISO A7Sii and the A6500.
I got an $800 savings from B$H on an A7Riii and 24-105 package a month ago so I’ll be skipping the mark iv.

The problem is not Amazon, it’s your expectation of what Amazon should be able to provide. Amazon offers millions of products you can not expect their people to be conversant on every single product with expertise. Would you also expect the high school kid working at Best Buy in the camera dept to be knowledgeable about cameras? That is simply unrealistic. B&H is a professional camera store. Says so right in their name. They are camera experts. Of course they are going to be a better source for information on cameras than Amazon. It has nothing to do with linguistics it is common sense. SMH.
