The morning light backlit my Corgi, Lexi, as she enjoyed the sunny warmth on the back deck, and the house acted as a very large reflector. No fill flash was needed. The catchlights clearly reflect the windows of the house and may or may not be appealing.

I simplified the background with a layer mask in the second shot.

Any suggestions?

My Tara wants to know if she can come play in our yard?

Warning the last time we had someone's dog over (well we did watch Pumpkin for 10 days while they were on vacation) Tara ran poor Pumpkin to exhaustion. When our friends returned and picked her up they said Pumpkin ran into their family room curled up in her favorite spot on the old couch and except to eat and potty slept for almost 3 days.

Vicki, I love your Lexi. I like what you did in the second photo but I love the smile on Lexi in the first photo better.

Beautiful pup, Vicki. I love both shots. I'm not bothered by the background in #1 but the other is very nice, too. The black background gives a more formal portrait feel.

Very cute dog and nicely photographed. Interesting about the catchlight. The reflection is so distinct!

Fabulous! What a gorgeous dog. May I have your permission to republish these photos on my blog Learning from Dogs?
