5D IV taking double shots

I thought I posted this earlier today but it's nowhere to be seen now so here goes again.

My 5D IV shutter is taking 2 shots on the majority of my presses. Say better than 50/50, one press of the shutter results in 2 shots. I have had it at burst speed for some bird photos, but returned it to Single shot.

I don't know whether it is my aging fingers not having the controls of yesteryear, or there is a setting I have missed that allows the camera to double up?? Is there a "sensitive" setting? Or is it just me being a Klutz?

What do you mean by two? Look at the file names. Are they consecutive, like 5002 and 5003? Or, are they different types of files like 5002.CR2 and 5002.JPG? You have the highspeed continuous set, see the H and the series of squares. Are you holding the shutter release in such a way that it will take multiple shots? If you go to page 160 of your 5DIV manual and change to single-show or low-speed continuous, does that address this issue?

It is set on continuous setting, if you are not fast on the shutter release it will. If you hold the shutter release button and it continues firing that is your problem. Check in your manual and it will give you the details.

You are in burst mode aka high speed continuous. If you only want one shot, turn the option to single shot, QED!

If all the other suggestions don't work, try restoring to factory specs.

You have it set to One Shot for AF - after you do a half press it won't change focus.
But the Drive is set to High Speed Burst which on the 5DIV (I have one) is fast enough it is almost impossible to only get one shot. Most people's reflexes just aren't fast enough to release the shutter before you get multiple frames.

In the upper corner box where it says 'One Shot' (a reference to your auto-focus setting) you will see 3 small rectangles superimposed on each other with an 'H' next to them. That indicates high speed continuous shutter. I'm surprised you are only getting 2 shots! For single shot shutter release you should see just 1 rectangle with no letter.

You can also have 1 with an S, so called Silent shutter.

As others have said, you may be getting confused between One Shot and continuous shooting. One Shot means the Auto Focus is focusing one time before you take the photo. Continuous shooting allows the camera to take several shots when the shutter button is pushed. I would recommend two things. Change the One Shot to AI Servo, that will allow your camera to continuously focus before you take the photo and change the icon with three boxes back to an icon with one box, for taking one photo when you push the shutter button. Although using continuous shooting, (icon with 3 boxes) works great when shooting sports or other fast moving subjects.

The quoted response is a correct response.
I have the same result as you do since I can't release fast enough either.
"High Speed" is much faster than my 72 y.o. reflexes.
Recommend that you back off to "Low-Speed Continuous or "Single Shot".

What did the owner's manual tell you about the set-up of this camera?
