As far as I know, MinnieV is in Newfoundland, Canada -- she had to deal with flooding and tornado warnings in Mississippi to get to the Jackson airport this morning 😲

She left me a photo of hers to share in case she won the challenge. Our intrepid traveler photographed this eagle last summer in Pacheedaht First Nation, BC

I will get it started this week. I wanted to give it a 3D effect to punch out the forward stump and Eagle.

Photoshop CC
To achieve the final look I duped the base layer. Went back to base layer and made a rough selection around the area I wanted to keep sharp, used the fill command and filled with Content-Aware. Next blurred this base layer with Gaussian Blur to 7.0. Moved on to the second layer, that is unchanged from Minnie's original, made some minor changes with Camera Raw made a mask for the stump, flowers and Eagle areas. Next added a curve layer to base blurred layer and darkened for more contrast. Just about done. I thought most people would be cropping and highlighting the Eagle. With that thought in mind I copied the Eagle to a new layer and masked it, enlarged it up a bit to make it stand out some more. One more curve layer to add additional contrast.

Sometimes they soar, sometimes they lurk.

Bits of two pre-sets in befunky.com (Orton and Impressionism), then an additional layer of pink texture to brighten the colors.

Went straightforward with this. Cropped to subject (eagle in rugged environment). adjusted contrast, sharpness, and tones to make the eagle a bit more outstanding without overdoing it.

My take. A little crop and some exposure corrections. #NoCompositesHere

"Eagle Eye" - sometimes their gaze is like a laser - and I tried to emphasize that aspect of the eagle...

I looked at this and remarked to my wife, "how does one improve on this?!"

So, here's an alteration, not an improvement.
As always, please view in download.

Added some emphasis to the eagle, added some blur to the stump, and gave it a black background.

All very creative edits but I felt there was too much distracting foliage around the eagle so I decided to crop much of it out like several others did. The original was underexposed but I like that technique so I only bumped it up a little. Other edits in LR.... warmed slightly, added some clarity to sharpen it up a bit, adjustment brush to highlight the feathers, and reduced the yellow slightly.

A little work in DXO PhotoLab and NIK Color Efex. Nice image to play with -- thanks for providing.
