Anthony Morganti (sic?) posted a YouTube video a few days ago comparing various single purchase photo editing programs, but also speculated on the recent Adobe price testing probe. He predicted a price increase in the Creative Cloud offering, to something in the neighborhood of $15-$18 per month.

The most current edition of PSE “PSE 2019” specifically includes significantly enhanced organizational power per reviews published in DPReview and Imaging-Resource. It updates regularly to include new cameras, but like Adobe and ALL of its competitors, those updates are not instantaneous with the announcement/release of new gear. If you just bought “the latest and greatest” camera, you may have a short wait while ALL editing apps catch up. Only under certain rare circumstances does PSE 2019 limit editing to 8-bit as specified it its literature which is widely available online.

I would take exception to your comment about PSE updating to include new cameras, unless you’re just referring to the latest version. I have PSE 14, and it still doesn’t support RAW files for my Fuji X-T2 and X100F cameras. That’s why I moved to Luminar 2018 for a $49 one time fee, and now use a free upgrade to Luminar 3 which does 99% of what PS/LR do combined. Best deal out there.

Even the latest version eventually will stop being updated. (Another misleading aspect of that earlier comment.) Adobe documents these ACR limitations at https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html

Are you familiar with Photoshop? It's a fairly large program and takes some practice. Do you need it for general purpose things or only for a single project?

PSE might be a good way to familiarize yourself with the concepts that Photoshop uses. You can purchase a license one time, whereas Photoshop requires a subscription. PSE is limited, so the choice really depends on what project you need it for. If it's for general purpose uses the full Photoshop will be better. However, if you take a long time (a couple years) to learn things, getting PSE first might be more cost effective.

To put things in perspective, $9.99/month (plus sales tax) is not a large expenditure. I find it less than my impulse purchases for a month, and I get much more long term value for the LR/PS package than the geegaws I spend money on occasionally. Updates are included in that price. It's on my credit card so it gets paid automatically and I barely notice it.

You might be better off buying a version of Photoshop elements if you do not want to get on the monthly toll road.

Could someone comment on what of significance is missing in current PSE vs PS?

I don't have a breakdown of what is missing in Elements compared to Photoshop, but if you buy Elements and get "Elements+" to go with it you won't be missing much. "Elements+" adds back in many of the Photoshop options that are not part of Elements. It is only $12.00 and you buy it according to whatever version of Elements you have. Elements+ gets updates from time to time and the updates are free. There is a comparison chart on the Elements+ website that has a table broken down by Elements versions that show what features are added each version.

Save yourself the agony and buy On1 - one time fee, no monthly charges and excellent features.

For most of us, $10/month is but the tiniest fraction of what we have already spent on gear. For most of he anti subscription crowd it's not a matter of money, but of principal.

I find that principle flawed.

I bought a copy of Lightroom 6. It is a onetime purchase and does everything I need.

But Adobe no longer sells it, a few on line retailers still have a very few copies but they will be gone soon if not already. (Chinese pirated copies anyone?)
And they stopped issuing updates, bug fixes etc in 2017. So if you get a new camera that is not in its list you will have to use a converter and convert to DNG to edit your RAW shots in LR 6. If you only shoot jpeg, well go for it. But I and many others shoot in RAW.

Pity your comment does not address the current version of PSE.
I tried Luminar twice and threw it in the junk pile both times.

PSE is 8-bit, Ps is 8-bit, 16-bit or 32-bit. I generally work with 16-bit PSD files. There are other differences otherwise PSE would replace Ps and even Lr for some users who can live with only a basic cataloging system.
