Hi,

I use a 2013 Samsung desktop with 4 GB of ram (3.89 usable) and 500 GB HD to process RAW files from a Canon 6D and it rarely freezes.

As said before, you need more storage capacity. You should also check all programs and apps running in the background as those take away lots of ram and are usually not essential.

Geez, I remember those wonderful days. Wow!!! 10MB was more space than anyone could possibly need. I'll be able to work on this computer for the rest of my life and still have space left over. That was a long time ago.

Ha ha ha yes and remember "Nobody will ever need more than 1 MB of RAM".

My phone today is way more powerful than my first computer. Not to mention digital cameras. That is a specialized application but a digital camera has a kick-butt processor hiding inside.

How many of your images are worth keeping? I always edit my files(Never shoot RAW)and toss out any thing that isn't worthy of display or having sentimental value. I doubt that I will ever fill my Hard drive. Of course, I'm not one who makes a profit with a camera. If you ever see anything I submit to UHH and feel like copying it, you have my blessing to do it.

I have a MacBook Air (2017) with 8G of Ram. I use it exclusively for photo editing with LR CC (Cloud version). I have 1 T of cloud storage on both LR AND google photos. I just started shootings in Raw and JPEG. I cannot upload photos because computer tells me I do not have enough memory in my hard drive. In total, I have less than 7,000 photos stored on that computer and only about 1,000 of them are both Raw and JPEG.

I am really frustrated. I will buy an external hard drive, but don’t I have to load photos onto computer first? or can I buy an external hard drive that will accept the SD card to store photos so I don’t have to put them all on the hard drive? I am soooo confused. Please help!

You appear to be using the option for local storage (keeping you photos on your laptop as well as in the cloud). Either turn off that option (see YouTube) or buy an external hard drive for local storage.

If you aren't using local storage, you may have run up against your cloud storage limit (20GB for $9.99/mo). Upgrade to 1TB for $19.99/mo.
If you don't want to pay more per month, buy an external drive (4TB for about $160) and use Lr Classic.

there are a lot of good replies here but in a nutshell...

1. you have sufficient ram to do what you need
2. get external storage, suggest a SSD, 1TB. they have gotten cheaper you will need an adapter that attaches the SSD to your computer. SATA III.

lots of overkill replies...here is all you need:

1. your device has sufficient ram to do the job

2. get external storage. I suggest an SSD, 1-TB. also, get an adapter that will attach a SATA III drive to your mac to attach the SD. that's it...:-)

I've said it before, but you can't be too rich or too thin, or have too much RAM or storage!

Simple answer: as much RAM as your computer will allow.
Worth a call to the computer manufacturer to get their advice.

Are you sure that's what the computer is saying? You are confusing memory and hard drive space.

Memory (RAM) should not affect copying/moving files to the computer (meaning, to its internal hard drive).

If you connect an external drive to the computer, it shows up (mounts) on the desktop, as would an SD card, just like the internal drive has an icon on the desktop. Copying to any of them is the same thing....AS LONG AS there is enough available space on the destination for what you are moving.

So an external drive or an SD card or any other storage medium is just giving you more storage space in addition to the internal hard drive.

The internal drive being TOO FULL would be your problem.

No SATA ports on a MacBook Air... an external SSD with a USB-3 connection is the appropriate solution.

Even on my very old laptop, I have found it is usable as long as I have a minimum of 15% of HD space left. Don't know if this will help.

One point to remember if moving files to another location and catalogued in Lightroom, do the exporting from Lightroom as then the application will know where to find the files from then on!!

Well thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated, I really like my iMac and probably will do the upgrade somewhere down the road.

Funny thing about that computer is that when I bought it I was worried that because I purchased the 21.5" instead of the 27" that it may be a bit small.... Not at all, I can only imagine how working with the 27" screen must be because the 21.5 is plenty of screen for me.

I feel the same about the screen — until I edit video in Final Cut Pro X. THEN I hook up a second monitor to see what I’m doing on a full screen.

Cost is almost always a factor to consider with Mac gear - it runs about 50% more than a similar performing Windows computer - be it laptop or desktop. But the Apple stuff sure is cool-looking. . .

So it's just like women- the better looking the higher the expense.

If you want to clean up your hard drive, get Clean my MAC. Gemini II will clean up your photos-get rid of duplicates etc. I use these all the time.
