Our last beautiful golden Buster would fetch the ball when I threw it in the back yard. When I first started doing this he would run to the edge of the pool and drop it in the water. I would go pick it up and throw it again - and again, back in the water. After four or five times of doing this it really dawned on me that HE was training ME to fetch the ball!

I spend time several times a week with a Border Collie. I think she might feel this way. She probably also thinks that she is aiding my general health by requiring me to repeatedly bend over to get the ball. I swear the dog is smarter than I am.

My son had black lab that was obsessed with retrieving a ball, stick, or whatever else she thought you could throw. There wasn't a dog around (that I found anyway) that would beat her to the ball. When she reached 14 years old , her arthritis was so bad that she had a hard time getting off the ground, walking, much less run, but there she was - dropping the ball at your feet. I would toss the ball about 20' and she would hobble over to the ball to pick it up. It was painful to watch her and I always thought that it could not be enjoyable at all for her. I truly think that she thought that she was trying to please me by fetching that ball. She was a great dog!

You’re not giving your dog enough credit. Yeah, it cares about you but it’s the retrieval thrill that’s the driving force.

Rover--a lab would get his ball and drop it in the path the mower was going to take so I would have to get off and throw it. It has been dogs just react to instinct but When you would ask him were the ball was he would think for minute and the take off and come back with the ball. he would take up a position in the outfield when I would pitch to my grandson and return the hit balls until he felt it was time to stop and he would drop the ball in the bushes. He was a great friend and only left when n God needed him.
