I am pondering upgrading to the FX line of Nikon cameras. I am on the fence about which to get. I like to take wildlife, landscape, vacation, outdoor portraits and weddings. I have been shooting since the 80's as a hobby and more recently for supplimental income.
I am torn between the D750, D810 and D850. I have the trio of lenses in FX and a few other special lenses all Nikon glass. I even contemplated a D5 which I have found a great deal on a new one never been opened for $4800.
I just need a push in the right direction.

All four FX candidates are great cameras where they will be larger than your current camera and the D5 seeming like a monster in terms of size and weight. You might want to try to find a camera shop where you can handle all / most of the candidates and "feel" the difference. (A D3 or D4 will give the same feel as the D5 for purposes of holding a candidate.) The square-ish, dual-controls of the D5 may prove to be the 'perfect' ergonomics to your hands, or maybe not. You'll know better by handling actual models.

I take only bird and wildlife pictures.
I have a Nikon D90, D750 and also D810.
My first choice is the Nikon D750.
My second choice is in Nikon D90, which I have two. I set these up for trap focus.
I don't know why I purchase the D810 I guess it just thought I needed it.
As I use it very little.
Hope this helped you with your decision

You could consider renting the cameras if you have no camera shops in reach. That might help in deciding which is best for you.

If you have the budget, go for the D850. If not, I would stay away from the 810 as it uses CF cards, which are a disaster (easy to bend pins when you remove and reinsert) and getting hard to find. For a budget approach, the D750 is a fine Fx camera with dual SD slots.

The D810 has both the CF card and the SD card slots.

There is only one camera store about 40 miles from me and they specialize in Canon which makes it hard for me to get hands on with them. Is the 850 really friendly to use? Heard it's hard to get used to because of the large megapixel count and it seems to have a large learning curve?

If you're talking about buying a $3000 - $5000 camera without even handling one, you might be justified in contacting lensrentals.com and rent one for a long weekend / full week and confirm your expectations.

CF cards do not have pins!! the cameras have them. Granted they are hard to find but not impossible.

The higher pixel count on the D810/850 shows more detail such will amplify any mistakes. I own the D810. You will get use to it. If your going to pick out of the 3 mentioned, 850.

I am selling a Nikon D750. It is a great camera but I just don't use it much, since I have 2 Sony cameras.
It is listed in the for sale section or pm me if interested.

If you are use to the D90, then you should be able to easily learn another Nikon DSLR. They are all very similar. I have a D850. It is a sweet, sweet camera. Don't shy away from it because "The higher pixel count on the D810/850 shows more detail such will amplify any mistakes." Just learn good technique and you will be fine.

The D850. Really you should have no hesitation, the advantages are overwhelming. I own it, I use it daily, it is outstanding. The D850, D500, and D5 all have the new separate focusing engine that delivers for sports.

I also considered the D850, but realized the D750 was more appropriate for me. I've had the D750, 24-120 f4 lens for a year, and am very happy with my choice.
