Hi, I am getting ready to retire and I plan on spending a lot of my time improving my serious hobby of taking pictures. I love landscape pictures but am not locked into that. I will be giving my wife my D750 and will be purchasing a new camera and lenses. I work for Kodak and have developed a critical eye when looking at my images. What would this knowledgeable group of photographers recommend a D850 or a Z7? Thank you

My personal preference would be the D850 hands down.

At this time, as good as the Z7 is, I would say that my D850 is the best camera that Nikon makes.

You said you have "developed a critical eye" but my question to you is have you developed good photographic techniques? If you have ANY camera and lens will do the job.

If your plans included landscape, street, astro, and family photography, but not sports and wildlife in action, the Z7 is a better option than the D850. The D850 is much heavier and the mirror is a pain: it causes vibrations at some shutter speeds and causes occasional front or back focus problems that can be almost impossible to adequately resolve. The D850 is the better options for action photography because it is better at acquiring and maintaining focus on rapidly moving subjects, but you have to put up with the mirror issues.

I own both and the D850 is STILL my go to camera for its greater versatility and faster AF. The Z7 is smaller and usually has my 500mm F5.6 PF lens attached for a quick, light wildlife combo though.

I am retired, bought a D850 to go with my D500 and have absolutely no regrets with either. It's probably the best dslr Nikon has ever made and gets rave reviews. The Z7 was supposed to be the mirrorless version of the D850, but there are two many reviews pointing out flaws with the technology. Maybe the next version will get there. I try to buy my glass used and there is a much wider selection of F mount lenses compared to Z mount, especially used lenses at usually a 20% to 40% discount compared to new. I think I will stay with the D850 and D500 for at least the next couple of years.

Perfected from the D800 .. D810 .. the D850 ...has a great Blood Line ..

The Z7 .., almost a prototype ..a few more model years and R&D to replace the D850 .., that being said .. The Z7 is a delight to use with its built in Image stabilization and smaller lighter body .. and a kazillion focus points ..

Reports of focus and focus tracking problems have haunted the Z7 since it's introduction. Rumor has it that firmware is due to correct it.
That said I own and shoot the D850, I know it's focus system is outstanding. Nikon put a separate focus engine in it and the D500 and D5. I think the D850 is the best Nikon camera ever. Rumor has it that a firmware due later this summer will give the D850 eye focus priority.
If it were me, and it was, I choose the D850, and that has made all the difference.
That said, mirrorless camera's have advantages, the two biggest are, no lens calibration is ever needed AND, you see what you are going to get exposure wise before you shoot, two really big game changers in my opinion.
I would strongly suggest you call Nikon to see if they have fixed the Z7 with a firmware update. If they have, I would then go with the Z7.
However, the lens line for the Z7 is still very limited, you must use an adapter to get other Nikon lenses attached. Personally I do not like adding anything between the lens and the camera.
Good luck on your decision.

There is always at least one. Yes good technique is important, but even with great technical and artistic skills, some cameras give you capabilities that others don’t. ANY camera won’t always do.
