My wife and I are heading to Kennebunkport in late August...

Other that eating Lobster (where is the best place) what else should we be looking to do...Is Whale watching good this time of year...

I will have my camera with me and plan on getting a few photos of the area...any suggestions>

Any thoughts would be appreciated...well, at least thoughts of Kennebunkport.

I will also have my eyes open on the trip there from Pennsylvania....

Chuck, Have at least 2 lobster rolls for me and some steamers. Great place to visit.

cow-blog
Belted Galloways: These are the “Oreo cookie” cows; black with a white band around their middle. Most days, they can be seen grazing in a field at a near-by farm. In the early Spring you can even see newborn claves. Seek out one of these amazing creatures and make a great picture memory of Kennebunkport.

The Seashore Trolley Museum: This nearby transportation museum has the largest collection of functioning old trolleys in the world. Take a ride back in time and discover it for yourself!

The Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm: The Wells Reserve is a national treasure. It is 2,250 acres of protected land, a restored saltwater farm called Laudholm and a natural haven for wildlife. It is open to the public every day and offers beautiful trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Be sure to use bug spray on your shoes and pants! Remember this little tip and you will have a great time!

The Brick Store Museum: This Maine Museum was founded in 1936 and today it is the focal point for the history of the area. The museum features five historical buildings with 70,000 artifacts and archival materials relating to the heritage of the Kennebunks. It’s a perfect activity for history enthusiasts and regulars who want to learn more about their favorite vacation spot!

Parson’s Beach: Travel from Route 9 along the winding road lined with ancient maple trees to one of the prettiest and most secluded Maine beaches. Bring a book and a beach towel and spend all day soaking up the warm sun rays or stop by for a picturesque walk any time of the year. It’s always a gorgeous place to see Maine.

Cape Porpoise Harbor: This picturesque working harbor is quintessential old-time Maine; see lobster boats lined up like sentinels in the harbor. Have a lobster lunch at the pier and watch the seagulls swoop over the fish pier trying to snatch a morsel of fish-bait. It will give you the best little snapchat of our gorgeous ocean town.

Spouting Rock & Blowing Cave: Two natural rock formations on Ocean Avenue where the rising tides create spectacular water shows. Take in the stunning views on a romantic night out or on your own to enjoy a peaceful time outside in Maine’s beauty.

Franciscan Monastery: A secluded spot for quiet contemplation amid rolling lawns, shrines and wooded paths along the Kennebunk River. This is the location for Candlelight Caroling at the Christmas Prelude. If your holiday break is bringing you to Kennebunkport this year, take note!

biking-kennebunkport
Old Trolley Line Bicycling Path: Looking for an off-road bicycling path? This is it; this rugged path runs from North Street to Cape Porpoise. Be sure to use bug spray!

Eastern Trail Bicycle Path: This is an easy bicycling trail which runs through the woods from Kennebunk to Biddeford, a distance of about 6 miles.

Have fun.

You will be sure about the rolls when you have them.

Try The Crab Shack - on the main drive. Their New England Clam chowder is the Best also.

You can't miss it it there is always a line.

In addition to what all have said so far - also when in Cape Porpoise - follow the road to Pier 77 Restaurant.
At the end you can see many lobster boats. The Ramp (below Pier 77) is a great place for a drink (a lot of character).

Try to make it to Timber Point Island (part of the Rachel Carson Preserve) - schedule to arrive around low tide so you can walk to the island.

If the Texas flag is up, the Bush's are in. Otherwise you will find everything you want at tripadvisor.com

If you feel like venturing a little farther afield, the Portland Head Light is one of Maine’s iconic lighthouses. Also Nubble Light. If you do go to the Portland Light, the Lobster Shack on Cape Elizabeth is about as good as it gets for Lobster in the rough. It’s on the water and has picnic tables outside and in. If you want a beer or wine, it’s a BYO place. Yes whale watching is still on at the time you are there. In Kennebunkport, try Allison’s for casual dining or Hurricanes for more formal. I second the Pier 77 and the Ramp suggestions.

Federal Jacks pub overlooks the river and marinas, good views, coffee, beer and food last time we were there. Cute town square bridge and houses.

Only one comment. DO NOT USE THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE. Whenever I go to New England from Philly my navigation tries to route me across the GWB. It is ALWAYS a disaster. As well as being less scenic. Go up 87 possibly get off on 84 and cross over to route 9. Stop in Hyde Park see if you can get in (ahead of time) at the Culinary Institute of America. The food is awesome and inexpensive (compared to what you would pay to visit one of these student's restaurants a year after they graduate) At Albany cross over on 90 toward Boston. There is no reason to waste time in Connecticut (known for the slowest left lane drivers in the nation) or Rhode Island. For a slower trip skip Mass as well and drive north of Albany, take 7 then 9 toward Bennington VT. 9 turns into 202. Once you reach Concord you can pick any smaller route that takes you east and enjoy the back roads.

This is a bit longer, but more fun than the GWB (a root canal is more fun than the GWB as well.) I always need a few days recovery, if I cross the GWB.

Be sure to go to Marginal Way in Ogunquit, especially for sunrise....crashing waves, beautiful light, big rocks, people surfing, etc. THen take the trail up to Perkins Cove to view the lobster boats and marina, and the dozens of birdhouses on one of the buildings. Go to Neddick Beach Lobster Pound to see the shack with hundreds of buoys. Eat at Pier77 and the view off the pier is wonderful. Don't miss Nubble Lighthouse for sunset. The Nonantum Inn is a neat place to stay...kayaking, swimming, sailboat trips, good food and a neat old resort. Just returned from there.....

Have to agree with dmseltz on avoiding 95 in general and the GW in particular. Head a little bit north and either take the Tappan Zee or go further north and get on 84. Not always shorter in time, but always shorter in aggravation and stress. I would not, however go all the way to I-90, as you're adding well over an hour to the drive. The scenic route through Vermont and New Hampshire is beautiful, but only if you're driving during daylight hours, otherwise just take 84 to 90 to 495.

I highly recommend Bob's Clam Shack in Kittery, right on Route 1. Best, freshest clams IMHO, in two different styles, with or without a milk bath.

All of the lighthouses mentioned above are beautiful, and Portland is less than an hour from Kb'port. I second the recommendations for Allison's, Hurricane, and the Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth. Not a big fan of the food at Federal Jack's but it's a great view and fun place for a beer.

Thanks for the reply...we haven’t selected our route yet, but will probably do a scenic route with a few stops along the way. I will probably use road trippers to plan the drive. I think it is about 7 hours from Hershey.
