I have no list, no criteria, I made no mention of "Good", "snapshots", or qualifying for anything. I expect that after reading all of the responses I will be able to put together a coherent picture ... from the responses.

No Criteria??? Ok, in your own words tell me what a photography hobbyist is. Now tell me what a, Just a camera owner is or implies. These are your questions, not mine. They need to have some sort of Meaning. Were is the Line in the sand between, 'having a photo hobby' and 'just owning a camera'??? Again your question. You questions are too generic and if not given some sort of boundaries/meaning, they could be interrupted differently by anyone reading the question.

My guess (could be wrong ... again) is that the OP is looking for reactions to these questions, rather than specific answers. When gathering information for this type of project it often help to cast a wide net, so to speak.

I don't think of photography as a "hobby." I think of it as a passion in my life that I pursue actively. It is much more than a simple hobby for me, it is an active and fluid part of my life and provides me with the opportunity to learn on a daily basis as well as to create beauty that I and others can enjoy. Not a hobby!

They type or number of cameras is not a criteria to be a hobbyist vs a camera owner. I have known photographers who use nothing but an iPhone. Their passion and quality of their images shows that they are a photo enthusiast, not just a camera owner. I have also known a person who has spent probably thousands of dollars on camera equipment and software, but I have never seen a photo that he has taken. To me he is just someone who owns a camera.
The photo hobbyist is one that often taking pictures, gets up early in the morning to capture the sun rise, is down on hands and knees to get just the right angle for a shot, will wait for hours to capture the right action, shadow, light, etc. They attack photography with a passion.
Hope this helps you.

I want to hear your thoughts on this matter. You may be quoted without credit or I may use your UHH name; and I may shamelessly use some of your words in my opinion parts. I am looking for ideas, thoughts, and anything you feel is relevant to the topic. Thanking you all in advance.

Please don't take this the wrong way. It's your plan your camera club. Why not go with your observations?

It is two hobbies for me. I enjoy buying, selling and owning all type of cameras and related equipment.
I just hung 4 framed photos at a library last night, (my club is having a show in the month of July)
I just got back from a 14 day river cruise and I am enjoying going through and pairing down the 4200 photos I took.

I tried to answer your first note as clearly as I could. If you still feel the question is too vague/ generic/ difficult/ intrusive/ insulting/ has no meaning /or is in any way objectionable - just don't respond.

Excellent question.
It originally was meant to be an opinion piece - my opinion. That was plan A. As I thought about it, I realized that my view is extremely limited - to me! I would prefer to hear a broader view of the question and thought that this forum would be the ideal place to ask it. Judging from the responses - it has been.

If I was to write such an article, I'd make it comical. What would be the point if it is serious - what information would you be imparting to other members and why? I can't think of any that would be welcome to the members which is the reason for doing humor.

Good subject! I have run into numerous people who call themselves a professional photographer that couldn't take a good picture to save their life.

I was following a van on I-25 one day where the guy claimed to be the #1 greatest photographer in Colorado. When I got home, I looked at his website. They were all just snapshots, almost all of which were crooked – not intentionally, just sloppy work. And he told the kind of camera he used, which was an old 2MP Sony camera.

I used to work as a pro photographer for a large magazine company. There was a man there who had more equipment than I did, and more expensive equipment than I did, but every picture he took looked like it came from an Instamatic! He had no idea how to take a good picture. He could have done just a well with a simple point and shoot.

To me, a pro is one who has had professional training (like Winona School of Professional Photography), and makes their living working as a photographer.

Interesting; some humor might be used. Thanks for the idea.

If I just had a camera in the house, got it out at birthdays, or for group shots of family and friends, every shot of them looking at the camera, posing, smiling, maybe showing a "V" sign or pucker-face, photography would not be my hobby. I might even take the camera on vacation, but every shot of every building, city, waterfall, sunrise, sunset, would also have in it my travel companion(s) staring at the camera with the same expression as above.
If photography was my hobby, I would know much more about it, probably read photo magazines, have a few lenses, and be looking for opportunities to improve my skills, take some awesome shots, print them and put them on my walls. I might even try to sell some of them, but would never make more money than I spent on my hobby. I would make my living at other things, but enjoy my photography as a means of expressing that artist within.

Photo editing is my hobby. Taking pictures is just a necessary evil.

I would change the title. "Photography, your hobby or status symbol?". "Is your camera a tool or a fool?".
"Does your camera have patina or is it a dust collector?" "Do your photographs shine or whine?"
