I need hearing aids. I started competing in rifle matches in the '50's and always tried to protect my ears but sometimes... Now at 71 years old I am losing my hearing. I tried some Amazon cheapies and they sort of worked, but in a restaurant or classroom environment they just boosted the background noise. Anyone have any tips or recommendations? Of course I am looking for a low price since I am retired and on a limited budget.
Thanks,
~Lee

Hi Lee - If you are a US veteran and registered with the VA, you can get 'em free so check into this. Great diagnostic service, your choice of the top quality hearing aids, free batteries, etc. chase
There are no cheap solutions that work well. See a trained and certified audiologist for a proper hearing evaluation. They can then provide guidance that fits your budget and your particular hearing loss.
If you're a Veteran, that is the way to go. The VA dispenses premium hearing aids for free. The ones I'm wearing would cost almost $6,000.00 for a civilian. I was a hearing aid dispenser before I retired, and if not a veteran, Unitron is a good, lower price aid. Starkey is another one. Stay away from the mail order "deals".
I just got mine this past Friday at Costco ($1599.99 for both ears). Less than 1/2 price of Sam's club and the "Pro" place and in two days of use thay are great. I like the "cafe" program best.
Read a recent article in Consumer Reports for a very thorough answer to this question. The short answer is go to Costco. Good luck with your situation.

Time to stop wasting coin in an attempt to save some. I'll look into Costco.
Thanks everyone.

I am also hard of hearing. Kinda deaf.
The top 14 keys on a piano- I might maybe hear the hammer hit the string.
EVERY time I was prescribed hearing aids, I'd go back. "WE really boosted the higher frequencies!"
But I can't hear them It would add a little resonance to what I could hear, creating "muddiness".
I;d like a set that could transpose those higher sounds into a lower register,
The one I liked best was a cheapo $15 shirt pocket box. Too cheaply made to bother with bass, or treble.
But it amped the middles quite cleanly. I could hear conversations. Alas, a leaky battery demised it.
There were slight advantages. Watching a nature show, millions of bats flew out of a cave. I couldn't hear them screech- but I could hear their wings flapping.
A pair of toucans were arguing. Again, I couldn't hear the voices, but I could hear the beaks clacking and the tongues thunking.

If you qualify, get a cochlear implant, the quality is wonderful, I have had mine for 8 years now, and I don't regret it

I've read that Costco has good hearing aids at reasonable prices. Check out the reviews. They seem to have very happy customers.

Hearing aids and "cheap" do not make good bedfellows. As you have already indicated. My husband has hearing aids. His are two years old and they were expensive. I wish you luck.
40 years after discharge went to VA when told about getting hearing aids from them, was disqualified because I had not had hearing test performed regularly over that period. My records showed I was just short of hearing disability when discharged. I guess they thought my hearing was going to get better with age. Went to Costco and after 5 years will replace them for new ones in December.

That's where I have my Phomax aids came from.
Costco for sure. I have had a pair for 3 years now and they work well with different programs you can switch for different situations. These are top quality hearing aids under a different brand name. I believe mine are actually made by Seimens but marketed under a different name fo Costco. Give them a try they are half the cost and the same quality.
