I’ll be going to Italy in September. I’m taking a 18-135. Do I need a wide angle such as 16-35 f2.8?

Thanks

Have a great trip. I have been to Italy and in my opinion save your money and us your 18-136.

You would be better off with a 10-18mm or something in that range.

Crop camera?

You might want a walking around lens smaller and lighter unless the bulk and weight don't bother you.

Unless you need a fast, wider lens for interior shots (such as the Vatican or museums), your 18-135 should be fine.

Thanks everyone I'm shooting with a Canon 7 d mark Ii

I'll just go with the 18-135 and maybe the 10-22

18-135 IS 27-202. 27mm IS NOT WIDE ENOUGH FOR MY TASTE IN ITALY.

The 16-35 is a great lens. If you are looking for an excuse to buy it, just do it.

However, the 18-135 is a bit more versatile, and if you have this version:

It's actually very good.

Ultra wide lenses are fun but after a while the images taken at the wider end "get old" - so much extension distortion, everything looks so far away, etc.

I have been to Italy a few times. I would say the 18-135 would be fine. If you are renting a car and driving from location to location. The fear will pass. Have a wonderful trip. Make sure you set up your cell phone for International calling and receiving.

I have traveled to most of Europe, including Italy, and always take my 18-200mm and 10-20mm lenses with a DX camera. I use the 18-200 99.5% of the time. Although I do use the 10-20 occasionally, on some trips it never comes out of the bag. So, IMHO, you don't really need anything wider than 18mm.

Selecting a lens is something very subjective. Lenses are selected when we need them for a specific means like an 85mm f1.8 lens for portrait photography. For many photographers using an APS (cropped) camera 18mm is all the wide angle they will ever need. Step just a couple of steps back and your near 28mm field of view of your lens simulates now a 24mm one.

The chances are excellent that if you use your lens properly it could easily be all you will need for your trip to Italy.

IF you intend to shoot interior shots of churches, museums etc., definitely take your 10-22mm (16-35mm FF equivalent FOV). Your 18-135mm lens will cover virtually all other situations. I shoot Nikon and Olympus M4/3 and found my crop sensor D5100 or my D7200 with my 18-200mm covered most needs and used my 10-24mm (15-36mm FF equivalent FOV) for interior shots and some landscapes. More recently, due to declining health/strength/stamina issues I use my Olympus Micro 4/3 OMD EM5 Mkii with either a 14-150mm (28-300mm FF equivalent FOV) or my 9-18mm (18-36mm FF equivalent FOV) for interior shots and some landscapes. Over the past 20 years business and pleasure has taken me and my wife to Italy numerous times and while I have taken many different cameras both still and video iterations, the above camera/lens choices have served me well. Your Canon 7D Mkii with your 18-135 and 10-22 will serve you well in my opinion. If you currently have a circular polarizer filter for both lenses, I suggest you take those too. One last suggestion; keep one hand on your camera at all times, particularly when in public places and crowded streets.
Enjoy your trip and post a few images when you return.

Your longer zoom covers most everything already. Think about a 10-20 but it requires a bit of re-thinking about composition.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this (too lazy to read all previous). par4fore mentioned that your 18-135 is an APS-C lens. Going to 16mm in APS-C doesn't really gain you too much. rcarol suggested a 10-18mm. That would put your wide end near the 16mm I use on a full-frame DSLR for Europe. Works very well.

16-35 is not wise, as it is only 2mm wider than your 18; the rest is the dreaded and inefficient "overlap". As an alternative, find a 10 or 11-16 or 20. Then, minimal if any overlap, and all bases covered!
