Ok, here goes. Out shooting today and all was well when all of a sudden the SD card stopped working. I have Nikon D7200 with two card slots. This occurred with the first slot. The camera told me to format the card. But I was using the card and had a couple hundred images on it. Before I got the message. I only reformat my cards in camera I never had an issue. I tried taking it out and re-installing it. To no avail. I swapped out card two and placed it in slot # one. Continued to tell me to format the card. It would not allow me to take any shot, even though I changed cards. Once I took out the "unformatted" card from slot two the camera functioned again.
When I got home I tried to download the picture and the computer (Dell) said Directory name is invalid and it told me to format the card. So I tried two different recovery software to see it I could retrieve my shots. RECOVER IT FREE and REPIVD RECOVERY. Neither one worked. Said no data found.
I than tried formatting the card in the camera. With the hopes of getting to try the recovery software again.
The message I received in camera. CAN NOT FORMAT, CARD MAYBE DEFECTIVE.

It is a SanDisk 16 Gig Class 10 90MB card. This is the reason I don't use larger cards. If I am outta luck so be it. But at least it was not a 64 Gig card.
I did a search in here and Google this is kinda my last try. Hoping Hogger may have the answer.

Try Piriform's Recuva, there is a free version.

But it sounds almost as if the camera was not writing to the card in the first place.

I will try that recovery software. I have nothing to lose. But I am afraid the card may be done. I can't format it neither the camera or computer.
Thanks for the info.

UPDATE

Actually that is one of the software's that I tried previously

Thanks again

Was the second card recording the same images as the first card? That's a good safety feature.

No I use it as a second card used after the first card fills up

Make sure the card is physically OK. I had one that one of the little dividers between the contacts was bent to the side and blocking the contact.

I'm with you there NJ. I only use 16 MB cards when traveling. I'd had to lose all my shots but one day, although it hurts, is not going to kill me.

I loved my Nikon 7000. Had the D300 & 700 etc. When I got to the D800 the card reading was a major problem. It has 2 slots and Nikon suggesting using only certain cards. The problem persisted.
After I spend a lot off money switching out different cards etc sent back to Nikon.
Came back fixed. It was obvious they had a problem. It was all over online.
Rockwell pointed out how inferior the Nikon was to the Canon.

Now your incident might be just a card. And we will hope that is it.
I actually loved my Nikons all the way from the 1980's. I had 2 D800's when
they came out. The D800's cards wouldnt mount. Was going to do stills and
most of all video with these camera's.
Some other focus and issues with the camera eventually soured me.

Not I know a lot of people will say this is over reaction.
I have never had a card failure.

And all my Sony's have never failed.

I did look at the contact they seem to be ok. But than again I am sure it would not take much to knock it out of wack.

Though this is my first failure on a card. Better that it was a limited loss.

Two different cards doing the same thing sounds like a camera problem and not a card problem. Get a new card and put it into Slot 2 and see what happens.

I have been a Nikon user forever. This has been my first problem. And it wasn’t the camera but the card

No just the one card. I switched them out. It would not work until I physically took out the damaged card. Once I did that Then the camera allowed me to continue shooting.
