It appears to me that many of these low level maneuvers were done by Russian hot shots showing off.

The video is not of US Blue Angels. Most were Russian jets flying where the folks speak Russian...watch the video again and you will clearly hear Russian words spoken. In two of the clips, you can clearly see soldiers in Russian uniforms. Low altitude flights by the Blue Angels are conducted over water, and not over populated urban areas. Also, several of the aircraft are Soviet era types.

Right, it wasn't one video. Some of it were the Blues F18's.

Doesn't that kind of flying in an urban area strike people as irresponsible? In San Francisco we get the Blue Angels during Fleet Week, but they don't fly anywhere near that low.

You should maybe stay home so you don't get hurt. I've seen the Blue Angels perform in Frisco, and they do fly that low, sometimes low enough to suck the water up behind the aircraft!

Blackhorse, - - - When the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds arrive in town Tipp City, OH (Dayton International Airport) every year for the Dayton Air Show they fly very low over the surrounding areas to announce their arrival and they practice their maneuvers over these same areas on Thursday and Friday before the Airshows on Saturday and Sunday. Never heard of anyone around here complaining, except when they don't get their cameras out in the backyard fast enough! A couple years ago a Blue Angel came screaming over the trees towards my garage door and pulled that baby straight up into a vertical climb; beautiful! I think My Wife spilled Her tea. I will go through My files and post it if you like.

I was stationed (Army-wise) at MacDill AFB by Tampa, FL,
and they had an annual air show which included such fly-bys.
It was always interesting to see . . .

Blackhorse, - - - When the Blue Angels or the Thun... (show quote)

Of course they fly low over populated areas where they are performing. But there is a great difference between 10 feet AGL (above ground level) and 100 feet AGL. Most folks could not tell the difference as everything is fast and seems so low. All that I was saying is that when the US teams fly very low they are over water, and that the crazy low pilots in the video appear to be Russian and NOT US.

Actually, the cone is not from a sonic boom. The air in front of the jet is getting more compressed as the jet flies faster and then decompresses as it flows past the surface of the plane. As it decompresses, it cools (this is how a refrigerator works). When the conditions are just right, as the air cools when it's being decompressed it reaches the dew point in the atmosphere. The moisture in the air will then condense into water vapor (a cloud) which is what you see. Great video!!

Neat. (Often wondered about that.)
Thanks!

Absolutely true! If it were breaking the sound barrier that close to buildings it would break the windows! That's why they go far offshore to exceed the speed of sound.

Figures.
I heard a sonic boom, albeit not REAL loud, when I lived in Florida when a shuttle landed at the cape. My house was 50 miles as the crow flies from the landing strip.

I've met some of the Thunderbirds and they all say they have the best job in flying. They know absolute precision is needed and goofing around is fatal. They sure put on a show with low altitude "sneak ups". They used the 13 fairway at our golf course as a lead in to the lakefront, which for them is 2 seconds away. Just about to hit a shot and a jet flies just over the tree tops. Not sure we shot our best games that weekend, but it was fun.

They don't ever say where this was happening, but I'll bet it's not in the USA, because a lot of that would be illegal here, and the US military wouldn't put civilians at risk like that.

At least 2 of them are in the US.

They don't all strike me as irresponsibly dangerous to civilians, just the most outrageous ones.
