I would love to hear your opinions as to which Nikon they think is the best for wildlife photography - the D750, D500 or the D810 - I am looking for another camera and can't decide which would work best so any thoughts you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The cameras you mentioned cameras are both crop sensor and full frame, I would take full frame over crop sensor. That leaves the D750 and the D810, both of those cameras would be great for wildlife but if you are of the mindset that "the more pixels the better" then go for the D810. I think the better question you should be asking is...what is the best lens to use.

given your choices, the D500 is the only choice. Don't worry about the crop sensor, worry about autofocus speed, low light performance and weight. Alternative may be a 760 if/when nikon announces it. the 750 is old - but it is always on sale -as is the 8100.

Might as well bite the bullet and get a Nikon D850... currently the best DSLR for virtually all types of photography. I replaced my D810 with a D850 and much prefer the D850. Get it refurbished on the Nikon site (nikonusa.com) but wait for one of Nikon's periodic special 10% off refurbished products sale, usually around holidays like 4th of July, Labor Day, etc. etc. Sign up for Nikon emails and they'll let you know when they have a sale. I bought my D850 refurbished from Nikon and it had about 25 clicks on it when I got it. Also bought refurbished Df, speedlights and many lenses and never had a problem with any of Nikon's factory refurbed products. Have fun... the D850 is a great camera and you'll love it.

Hear that Trish? The D500 is your ONLY choice.

I opted for the D610 from KEH . Much lighter and is easier to hand hold with my Sigma 50-500

I have the D850 and am satisfied with it until I do BIFs/Osprey dives and any fast movements. I HAD to get the Grip and special battery to increase my FPS from 7 to 9 (if you use aa batteries UhUh). If you are doing BIFs you need the extra FPS!! I wonder if most of this esteemed group do very fast action subjects. Also my buffer fills quickly.
Taking all the specs of the different cameras into consideration the D500 is the best for birds and wildlife unless you're at the bird feeder. 10 fps , buffer forever, 20 mps no matter how much you crop! I just can't justify another camera (at this moment)

The D500 being a crop camera crops out at 20 megapixels. Any of the other full frame or say the D850 46 megapixel camera crops out at 20 megapixels. I'm not sure what the other cameras the OP listed crop out at but I know that they are less that the D850. The D500 is 20 mps no matter what.

If you follow Indrajeet Singh from Goa, India, he has remarkable wildlife images using his D500. I see it is on sale right now through Nikon. If I was upgrading, I believe I would choose the D500.....IMHO.

If you're looking out your window or sitting on the porch waiting for a Cardinal or a Blue Jay to show up and sit still for a while then ANY of the aforementioned cameras will be fine. I can name 3 or 4 different types of bird actions that I wish I had a D500 instead of the D850.1. An osprey diving for a fish and flying off. 2.A least bittern perched and striking a minnow and withdrawing 3. A Purple Gallinule running/flying straight towards me then away. I would ask if any of these actions or similar BIFs are important?
I have all of such topics posted here and wonder if any of the advisors here are taking this type of photography into consideration.

Let us get technical for a moment.

The 2 cardinal shots were not made with the same conditions so are not a comparison of only cameras. I could see before I checked the EXIF data that the aperture used was different giving different "bokeh".

FX vs DX: FOR THE SAME MEGAPIXEL COUNT a DX will give more "reach".
However, cropping an FX down by 1/1.5 in height and width to get the same magnification reduces pixel count by 1/1.5²=0.44. That means that the FX sensor must have >2.25 (1/0.44) times the number of pixels so that its' cropped image will have more pixels than the DX.

Being a Canon user I can't comment on Nikon model performance.

Thanks. It seemed like you were saying you could crop a D500 image and still have 20mp. My mistake.
