What is the car of your dreams?

If you could have any one car old or new, what would it be?

Attach a picture of your choice if you like.

I know I would have trouble selecting just 1 above another;
but sometimes tough decisions just have to be made.

If I had to chose ONLY 1 car, it would be the original '54 Corvette. I had a 1/8th scale model of it when I was about 7 years old and always dreamed of owning one.

I've fantasized about owning a corvette. It was after seeing what I guess was a late
60s model in dark green with side pipes, burble out of its driveway and down the road.
What struck me with that car was the slow burble as it went down the road...
the effortless way it suddenly disappeared.

I think this would be my choice-
Gary Cooper's 1930 Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster

I wouldn't care if I couldn't drive it. I would be happy to just sit in it in the driveway

At this point in my life, it would have to be reliable and maintainable, so I would choose a Porsche 911 (Turbo) S or a Mercedes E63 AMG. Both are rocket fast (~600 BHP, 0-60, 3 sec, 200 MPH) and very “streetable”

I'd pick a 1972 De Tomaso Pantera. But then, it's because I own this one.

66 red Thunderbird because there was one in front of me at a stoplight and I stayed far enough back to admire it that I avoided hitting it when a car caused a chain reaction fender bender with me and the two cars in back of me. I shot forward a couple of feet just as the light changed and the t-bird left and missed a bump from our 66 Ford Galaxy. The offending car backed up and left the scene, leaving a trail of radiator fluid.

I would have cried if that beautiful little car had been damaged.

Very Cool! Have you owned it since new? I looked at a new one in the 70’s. If I recall, it had a 351 CI Ford Cleveland and a 5-speed Hewland transaxle.

TriX, essentially yes. We purchased it new from a local Lincoln dealership. It has a 351 Cleveland but Hewland didn't make the transaxles for those. ZF in Switzerland did. It is a 5 speed. The speedometer goes to 200 MPH and I've used almost all the numbers, both on the track and on the street.

The car itself has been through several transitions, as we used it for a test bed for suspension experiments. To drive the car hard enough to test suspension components and adjustments, we modified a Cleveland that ended up producing around 800HP. This engine was totally unmanageable in a street setting. So, after we were finished testing, etc. we changed the engine back to the stock one. We also pretty much re-installed a lot of the interior parts that we removed during testing.

Later we juiced the stock one just a little and dyno'd it and found it to produce a respectable, but manageable, amount of HPs. However, we kept a lot of the track settings and equipment in the car. It still has the full roll cage, 4-point harnesses, Halon fire suppression system, larger radiator, and different sway bars. Probably a few other things that don't come to mind at the moment. The tires are Pirelli P-Zeros 335-35 rears and 245-45 fronts. I don't recall which dampers we used, but they are adjustable. We also weighed and balanced the car for percentage front to rear loading. I think the next thing I'd consider doing is an electronic fuel injection system. Carburetor parts are getting harder and harder to locate.

Thanks Bob, the one I looked at was at a Lincoln dealership as well.

I actually had a “run in” with one on the street one night. I was driving a 73 911E, and a drunk in a Pantera side swiped me down an exit ramp and took off. I chased him down at 100+ and when I hit the high beams on the Ampliluxes while on his back bumper, he stopped. He begged me not to call the cops (he was on the way home with a girl), so I took his DL for security, and the next day we settled up. Might have been a different outcome if he had been sober as the Pantera had the edge in both power and suspension (although the 911E was quick for the time).

Kinda wish I had either bought the Pantera or kept the 911 - both are worth almost 10x what they cost today.

Glad to know you put it on the track - I raced SCCA and IMSA, but not successfully 😹.

Cheers
