Fuel dragsters are among the most dominating machines ever built. Over a span of only 4 seconds they accelerate from a stopped position to 330 mph and back to stopping in slightly more than 1/4 of a mile, 1320 feet! The engines are capable of producing around 8000 horsepower. When they bark, it shakes the ground on which they move. To make them operate requires an entire team of mechanical geniuses. Their launch is the photographer's greatest challenge. Now you see it, now it's gone! The rear tires are known as "wrinkle-walls" because of what happens when the lights go green and and the dragster goes gone. The tire's side-walls are ripped out of shape as 8000 horsepower are applied instantaneously and the treads bite the asphalt like no other tire ever built. When these monsters come out to play everyone takes notice. They are the reason crowds follow the NHRA. Only the dead are immune to their excitement.

Been hooked since the 60's David. I think they're eating them now over 11,000 horsepower. Sight sound and ground pounding. A sensory overload.

Nice set, looks like you had a good vantage point! Today's dragsters put on a spectacular show, but I still enjoy the vintage drags and today's Sportsman classes as they more closely resemble the racing in my day at the track. Glad to see the manufacturers bringing back the Super Stock classes.

We moved around to 3 different locations. Mostly so Paiz could see this sport from a different vantage point. Launching is one thing but seeing 330 mph is quite another. She loved it and she's 8.

They were recently finally able to accurately measure the horsepower of those blown nitro engines, and it came up 11,000 horsepower!

Thanks Mark Paiz and I had a fun day together. Especially since they have a pound of ice cream for a buck.

Thanks Vince. I used a 28-300 Nikkor for these. Didn't want to carry all my heavy good glass around all day. Especially when I had Paiz with me and telling her all that was going on.
