The David was originally placed above a piazza in Florence, then moved inside a few years later. When you look at the David in person in Florence, it is spectacular. I don’t believe marble formed by Michelangelo can be adequately reproduced with plaster or fiberglass. Even in person the perspective is odd with David though. The toes, the hands etc. are too long. However, from the perspective of looking up from the Piazza to the exact spot it was created for, the statue reportedly takes on an appearance that shows a perfectly formed lithe, powerful adolescent looking towards the horizon. Michelangelo was amazing in his ability to create perfection from marble by manipulating perspective.

A book called' Pinhole Photography' by Eric Renner explains in detail how this was done.
The same technique is used in art from hundreds of years back.
Highly worthwhile read.

In his autobiography, David expressed his dislike of that. How did I father so many kids if hung like that was his point.

Even pea shooters can take out a target, so this comment is just childish.
And anyone with a modicum of art history knows that male penises were deliberately downsized during the period to "prove" that sex wasn't the point, or that it din't become a "point" of insult, just as hands and feet were often sized up to enhance the "power" of the model.

Pardon me. Not my purpose to offend.

A woman I had just started dating had a photo of the original statue in her home. I told her that I was worried that I would not be able to measure up to her expectations.
ROFL... the size of his "package" never once crossed my mind as I sat in the gallery. I am a Fine Arts degree holder, and this is the single most impressive thing I have seen anywhere, anytime and i have seen quite a lot. I don;t care who you are, it takes your breath away when you turn the corner. It is worth the entire trip in itself. The Sistine chapel was a let down comparatively, and I thought it was going to be the other way around.
He does sport a nice ass, mine looked like it in my youth. LOL The hairline cracks in the marble of his feet concerned me. I read that a US company has offered to install a earthquake proof pedestal under him, so that the inevitable earthquake that absolutely WILL hit Florencia won't reduce this to a pile of rubble. They say even a tiny tilt , 3° comes to mind, will bring him down. Apparently the Italians don't want outside help or won't admit they can't do or afford it, whatever... that they can do it themselves. But with so many very old places to spend lotsof $$$ on, they are not getting to it, and the clock is ticking. . it will be as stunningly sad as Notre Dame was...
I will attempt to paste a full size JPEG of the D800e NEF. You should be able to zoom in for details. I did not tripod it as I would have really wanted to.
I did see the original several years ago, and it was impressive. Of the European cities I visited on the trip, I found Florence to be the most beautiful. In real life, according to the Biblical account, King David had the sexual power (and morals) which foreshadowed these traits in presidents Kennedy and Trump. If he looked anything like this statue, it wouldn't be a surprise.
