Well people have done selfie with film camera but today's cell phone with front facing camera and camera with swivel LCD make selfie a lot easier to do.
People want to do selfie because the want to do a lot of and asking others to take their pictures that many times isn't easy. They also want it because they can frame it the way they want it and see their pose/expression before taking the pictures.

Right. It shouldn't bother anybody what others do.

I'm old, so there are lots of things that younger folks do and like that, I find kinda "funny" but when I was younger, I did stuff that perplexed or aggravated my elders too!

My approach is multifaceted. In some cases, I feel if you can't fight 'em, join 'em. Some of the newfangled stuff is fun! OR, If whatever it is, is not harmful or infringing on my life, I'll "just get used to it"! As THEY say, it is waht it is!

So here's MY gripe list: As an audiophile and a lover of great music, rap music over the horrible PA system and dreadful acoustics in the supermarket is nerve-wracking! Nothing can be done- they can't change the "radio station" it is all streamed from "somewhere" and all the local stores subscribe to the same service! Then, when the younger folks make announcements they shriek into the phone or mic, not realizing their voice is gonna be amplified. "The garbage compactor at the rear of the store is now open" is just what I need to hear when I am selecting my overpriced organic vegetables!

Tattoos on the face and face piercing give me the willies- but it ain't my face and body. They'll be sorry when they get older. How about those massive holes and grommets in the earlobes! Well, it's none of my business until they come into my studio for a portrait sitting- with their grandmother!

Devices and phones at the dinner table, texting while driving and walking into traffic- UGH! Nothing wrong with social media unless you live your enter life online!

Selfies are fun and harmless. Y'all amateur psychologists like to tag folks with funny habits as having serious mental, behavioral or psychological disorders- that's not nice. I guess we all do it and bandy about terms like paranoia, multiple personality (schizoid) tendencies and narcissism, etc. Those can be devastating illness not merely annoying habits!

"Selfie" is just a relatively new buzzword- as others have alluded to, self-timer, long pneumatic, and remote controls have been around forever. Funny, I had all the self-timers in those MXV shutters disabled so the timer did not accidentally kick in when I was trying to grab an important shot.

The only thing I find disturbing on my cell phone camera is when the "selfie" mode kicks in unexpectedly when I am trying to shoot something and my face appears on the screen. Some mornings it's enough to stop an 8-day clock and make it run backward-UGLY

It may look like a craze, but I don't believe it is. Rather, it is just an extension of the nature of social media. Is social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) nothing more than a craze? I think this will be with us for quite some time, in some form or another, and so will selfies, which are linked to social media.

Personally, I don't do selfies. But I also don't do social media. Yet even as a non-participant, it's not that difficult to observe what's going on in that realm, and see why selfies are such an integral part of it.

As i recall, there was a topic on UHH several days ago that identified UHH as a social media site (just a specialized one) Just saying!

The problems that I see with selfies are (1) The camera is too close to the subject; and (2) the omission of the photographer's arm from the photo. For me, these are distorted images. I find that even an untrained stranger can usually get a better photo. When I take a photo for someone else, I always ask them to check the screen to be sure it's ok. If not, I can do a re-shoot.

They solve their own problem with selfie stick. I personally never do selfie (and never want pictures of myself) except when I do my own passport photo. To many they like their pictures in they way they want and it works for them. I never could take a picture of my wife that she liked and she is happy with her selfie.
It's easy to understand.

Can someone explain the recent trend toward "selfies"? Are people afraid to hand their cameras or phones to a stranger and ask for a photograph when they want to be photographed with another person or in front of a landmark? I have never had someone try to run off with my camera.

It may be that some people like to take selfies because they're not too confident in themselves of how they look and they are looking for the approval of someone else.

Of course photographers have been photographing themselves for decades and decades, possibly since the invention of photography.

I have probably created 4 or 5 images of myself, but I have been shooting SLRs since the 70s, more
than 40 years. That is an average of about 1 every 10 years.

Now there are goomers making "selfies" at every meal time. Then posting on Selfbook, Twatter and Instagroan.... Yeaah look at me! I have a burger at Maccas... Weeeee!

Is it a symptom of insecurity?

It's one thing if a person creates an artful self portrait, but I reckon the compulsion
to take crap snapshots of oneself at every banal location is... well; banal

MWSilvers hit the nail on the head: "self absorbed and ego centric".

There has to be something fundamentally awry with anyone who has paid
for a "selfie stick".

I've only taken a couple of "selfies" and they were all experimental ones at home. For the occasional shot of me with some special place I trust someone else to do it with my camera. Most of the time it's satisfactory. I consider the fact that I have photos of a location to be enough proof that I was there--I don't need a photo of me in the picture to do that. I have enough ego that once in a while I'll give in to the notion, though. I don't have a smart phone, but if I did it wouldn't be being used for "selfies".

This "selfie" craze is getting serious, a lot of people have been killed doing "selfies', so many some locals have started putting up barriers and signs to stop the practice. I guess it is Darwinism in action.

Where is this nice safe place you live, where you would hand your goods over to a total stranger? There are plenty of places around the world, including our country, where handing your camera to a stranger is tantamount to giving it away. Seen it happen, more than once. I even resort to the use of camera straps with embedded stainless steel wire(s), to keep some clod from cutting the strap and leaving with my camera.
And, my own take is that selfies are for self-centered individuals.

I don't really get the selfie craze other than "It's all about ME!" Beautiful scenery, and all she is caring about is her face in the picture. (Location Oregon Coast near Seaside)
