Excellent images are taken on cell phones. There are sites devoted to cell phone photos by wonderful photographers. There are excellent apps for processing and editing cell phone photos. Just think of cell phones, not as phones, but as cameras. Just think how many times you look at a photo you enjoy. Is your first impression: Oh, look a photo taken by a Canon.....or substitute any known brand. Just add cell phones to the mix! The best camera is the one in your hand.

It might help the thoughtful ones to consider that most who do photography function as snapshooters. They do so heedless of the ins-and-outs of the craft of photography. That's about the size of it.

And that is why I do criticize the OP for even talk about it. People use cell phone because it works well for them. Give them our camera and it wouldn't work for them.

I don't seem to remember back in the film days that serious photographers would denigrate people who used instamatics or other point and shoot film cameras, and say they would get better photos with an SLR and a selection of lenses.

No they didn't.

It's not the camera equipment it's the eye that sees the image to record, always has been

Many monitors have a rotating mount. I believe it is meant for viewing documents on portrait orientation as since most documents are printed that way. It saves time by reducing the need to scroll as often. I see it mainly in multiple monitor setups where the primary display is in portrait orientation. As you probably know, Windows lets you switch orientations with a single combination keystroke or using the Display settings available with a right-click on the desktop. I think a Mac does it if say “iPhone” directly into the mouse.

Thanks for this tip. I was not aware of it.

Wonderful story and very interesting perspective. I love it!! Photography for me has been a God sent. As I am reaching my “golden years” it has served a dual purpose. When people retire they need to find something they are passionate about and something that will stimulate their mind by learning something new. I take classes given by our local camera shop and community college and I am always learning something about photography. I also enjoy traveling so much more when I bring my DSLR and separate myself from our group so I can find that awesome shot. Then when I get home I can relive those experiences all over again through my photos. I have 3 grandchildren and I have thousands of photos of them. I plan on making a video for each of them documenting their lives from birth. They will appreciate this and remember me long after I am gone. The point of my story is that whether you use a DSLR, cell phone or iPad to take photos it doesn’t matter. Enjoy the moment and remember that photos make time stand still forever.

I see so many people using their cell phones to take pictures anymore. I know they can get better pictures with a camera (I think!) The times they are a changing!

I have a cell phone and I assume it will take pics but I've never tried to take one. That's why I have a Canon 5Dc- to take pictures. I don't take snapshots, I take photographs. I've therefore never missed a shot, if I want to take photos, I have a camera with me. If I don't, I don't. I'm a field trialer as well and as I told my wife, I feel sorry for people who trial German Short Hairs etc. instead of real Pointers I feel the same way about people who take pics with a cell. Pity is all I feel.

I see that a lot and wonder if they will even look at the pictures again later. If so, they will just swipe their finger across the screen when reviewing photos and see it for a fraction of a second.

Whether smartphone photos are viewed later or saved for archiving is an individual choice. A reasonably good smartphone photo can be equal to or better than the quality of an image from a DSLR. As has been said here many times:

- "The best camera is the one you have with you," and
- "It's not the camera; it's the photographer."

Whale Rock. Scituate, MA. iPhone SE. (normal settings).

Save your pity for those that are pitiful.
Cell phone photographers are happy to catch and share images of family and friends that would have never been produced without the cell phone.
Nothing pitiful about people having fun taking pictures.
