"An optimist is a person who believes that a housefly is looking for a way out" - George Jean Nathan

This is a Flesh Fly. They are easily identified by their black and grey stripes. I must say that they are much cleaner than the trash covered House Flies that I have caught, which I am getting fairly good at getting them into the plastic pill bottle before they fly away.

I find flies to be quite fascinating with the way they rub their front legs together as though they are planning something evil. Rain still off and on here however there are always willing subjects if I look for them.

Nathan was a close associate of one of my favorite American writers, HL Mencken. A fellow Marylander. No bite marks on that man's tongue, for sure.
Flies are realy a clean animal. The motions you mention are to keep sensory organs clean.
They may be one of the more useful of insects, ridding the landscape of the carnage left by our autos on wildlife.
They have helped to solve many a murder mystery.
They have been used as lab animals for years.
Your attention to detail has paid off. The work you are posting is amazing in the depth. My hat is off to you.

Thank you for the kind words and all of the support and education you provided me. There are a variety of flies here (I suspect elsewhere also) so when I see one that I haven't photographed I try to catch it which I find to be enjoyable. A battle of wits and determination although it probably doesn't say much of me when I am outwitted by a fly!

Flies are easy to trap.
A two liter plastic bottle with four holes, large enough for flies, one inch from bottom and equidistant around bottle. Appropriate bait. Flies enter low and then will fly up to leave. Catch some and refrigerate or freeze to get specimens. Vary the bait. A dead mouse or bird attracts many flesh eater's. Road kill is a good source of flies. You need a net, I will send a link to the one I use.
Killing in alcohol will take care of the germs on the fly.
An interesting read is "A Fly for the Prosecution".
Sunny here, so up and about. Never know what awaits.

Such detail, I find the feet of insects interesting in their complexity and this image shows the best detail I have ever seen them.
