Hello Hedgehoggers, anybody out there with experience with the fuji x-mount 18-135mm lens? I'm considering getting one as a useful travel travel lens but online reviews seem a bit mixed with particular mention of chromatic aberration. Hearing from users with real world experience would be of great assistance. I'd be interested to know which bodies you'd used it on and autofocus performance. Thanks all.

I have that lens on an X-T1, currently my only lens and find it to be a great for most of my photography. I'm certainly not a seasoned photographer, but have had no issues with chromatic aberration or autofocus performance given the capabilities of the X-T1. Tack sharp, great build, and weather sealed.

I used this lens on a month long trip in Europe last Fall with no apparent problems. Caveat, I shot primarily on auto mode.

What camera were you using the lens on?

i have been using 18-135mm lens for my Fuji X-T1 for the last five years and the results are very good. i have recently purchased Fuji X-T3 and i am using the same lens.with good results.but some of the photographers suggest 16-55 mm lens for Fuji X-T3 and i am not sure whether i should invest in this lens which is rather expensive.

I have used that lens on a Fuji X-T2 for travel in Borneo, Bali, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Sicily. It gave me excellent results with no chromatic aberration and no autofocus problems.

I’ve had it since it came out. It’s been all over the world with me. It’s on most of the time. The only time I don’t use it is for bird/animals that are too far away. It’s a fabulous travel lens. It does have a creep problem. I don’t use a neck strap I use the Spider Pro belt system so when I clip it to my hip the lens can become extended if I wasn’t careful. But I put the Lens Band on it and it stays tight.

I have five Fuji lenses and an XE-3 body which have all of the firmware updates. I also use Leica lenses on this camera with the Fuji adapter. If you use JPEG I think you will notice hardly any differences in image quality between what you get with the 18-135 and any other of Fuji's excellent lenses. The reviews which criticize the 18-135 all seem to be doing so using raw image results. In JPEG the camera will correct the majority of any aberrations this or any other Fuji lens has. The 18-135 lens is a bit big but it gives great range without having to change and it's weather proof. The alternative is the combination of the 18-55 and the 55-200. Much bulkier, more expensive and not weather proof. On travel I take the 18-55 for inside or crowded and the 18-135 for outside. An XE-3 with firmware updates (important) focuses each of my lenses (23/2, 18-55, 60, 18-135, 55-200) very well (fast/accurate) and do a good job with focus verification with the manual Leica lenses. I suggest you use small zone focusing. Enjoy your travel. Great camera system.

Hi there,

I use this lens most of the time. With XE2, XT1 and XT2. It is my most used lens. No problems with it. I live in Costa Rica. The weather in the Green and the Rainy Seasons can change very quickly from dry sunny to rain. It's weather sealed (as are the XT cameras). I would highly recommend this lens. I also have 10-24 & 14mm Fuji lenses which are great but not weather sealed. I don't notice any CA. The AF performance is fine for me. It also has great IS. Go for it.

Sometimes the 18-135 is a bit slow to autofocus on my X-T2 but never found chromatic aberration a problem. I think it would be an excellent travel companion, though the smaller shorter cousin the 18-55 would be my choice for travel because I rarely use tele length on travel subjects unless I were going where there are antelope or other such critters to shoot.
Here is a detail of a shot which would display any color fringing if there were any. As you can see there is absolutely NONE.

I have been using this lens, among others, for 2 years. Using it now on an X-H1 and X-T2. Happy with the lens. It is not to be compared to a 50-140 which I also have but when I go out for routine shooting or on a travel trip, the 18-135 is what I will have. Along with the 14 2.8 and maybe the 23 1.4.

I have 3 Fuji cameras and 6 lenses. I leave the 18-55 on the XE1 and the 18-135 on the XT1 most of the time - (unless there's a reason for a prime). I hiked a week through the White Mountains of NH with the XT1 + 18-135 - bringing also the 35 1.4. and 14. I've been very happy with the range of DoF and the focus and have never noticed CA with it. (I have tri-focal eye-glasses with heavy prescription and experience terrible CA with those!). The only negative comment I think of is that the lens tube tends slide out (extend) when carrying with it hanging down. Since it's biggish it WANTS to hang down too. Be sure you have a decent bag that will carry it nicely. I use a shoulder pouch from an Army Navy store. It has a large plastic clip (no Velcro) for a flap lid and I inserted the bottom of a large rectangular plastic juice bottle with padding in the bottom. This keeps the bag receptive to the camera - and I love it - even while hiking. I attach (molle) a water bottle pouch to hold two prime lenses when wanted. AS I look through my shots, the super-majority are taken with the 18-135.
