I've used 12 mpx pocket cameras on vacations where it rained every day and that was to be expected. I bought one that would fit in a fanny pack with my cash and hotel key. The vacation went very well and the outside shots looked great. Moving inside with it's tiny flash, well simply don't use the flash if at all possible. For our camera we set it to auto so I could hand it off to the kids and there would be no issues. All shots taken were of jpeg so the card wouldn't fill up. I off loaded all shots every day to my laptop and labeled the folder as to where we went.
Today all my compact cameras have been given away as I really want more - quality, lens choice, lens sharpness, and never use total auto features. I want to control the shot so I take full size cameras albeit light ones (D7500) over my heavy Pro camera (D810). The weight savings is significant as the Pro camera is heavy and so are every lens it uses. My D7500 with the 35mm f1.8 G lens is very light and has many features I love (like previewing my focus point at 1:1 by hitting one button!), live histograms you view before taking the shot and in live view I can touch the screen to change focus quickly. I cannot go back to the simple cameras anymore but they do have issue as for how my family was using them. I remember my wife returning from a long vacation with the kids, using her compact Nikon camera that doesn't see through the lens, and had finger print smears on the lens from DAY ONE of the trip ... and didn't know it after taking nearly 1.6 Gb of data! She handed the the sim card to edit the shots and the bright highlights had ghosting all around them. This could happen to you with these little cameras so beware. Check the lens in that no one has touched it. The only good thing out of it was ... there were far less pictures to edit. LOL

I agree with you except I prefer to take my D810 rather than my D7000. With the 70-200mm lens or the 150-600mm lens, I can also use it for exercise too.
On a trip to China in 2009, the carryon weight limit was 5 pounds on domestic flights. I could not take my D3 and even the 28-300mm lens due to weight. So I used a Canon SD880 IS and carried it in a belt case so I could take some necessary items as carryon. To this day, I am sad that I could take my pro gear. Photos by the Canon were fine to most people, but I knew what they could have been with the D3.
