Shoot through umbrella alignment

I'm using a flash stand with a flash bracket to mount a yongnuo flash and attaching a 30" shoot through umbrella shaft to the flash bracket through the little hole provided on the flash bracket. I am noticing that with this arrangement, the flash is not directed to the center of the umbrella but rather above center and I would prefer that it be centered. Is there a way to do this? Is there an adapter I can mount to the flash or flash bracket?

Thanks,

Pat

I can't say this will definitely help but I had to laugh as a link for this came up UNDER your topic on UHH:

If not this, maybe something on the site will answer your need.

In any event, quite a coincidence. Synchronicity at its best!

Tape/connect it to the umbrella shaft. Gaffer tape will not leave any residue on the flash unit or umbrella shaft.

I just live with it :-)
Lol.
Be interested to see if you see a big difference using tape to lay it on the steel rod....

Most of those units provide a negative 7 deg tilt
setting for the bounce/tilt head, which would do
pretty much what you need. Check yours. Other
more complicated "solutions" are prolly ignoring
what is aleady built into the flash itself.

The cross drilled hole through flash brackets is at an angle so that it will tilt the umbrella up a little. I use a Kupo swivel umbrella bracket. It has a large clamping area to prevent it from rotating from the leverage the umbrella exerts on it.

Propet company made this unique bracket to keep the flash aimed at the center of the umbrella. I'm not sure if it's still made.

You can attach a small ball head to your light stand. Hope this works for you.

Very clever, a good solution to a problem that I have had as well.

I would be surprised that a few degrees would make any difference. Set your Speedlite zoom to wide and you can throw a diffuser on it or use the little flip out one. I doubt you will lose much light because you probably are not shooting at full power anyway.

I think you're concerning yourself with an issue that doesn't warrant the mental energy.

If the flash were perfectly centered in a "shoot through" umbrella setup, seems to me that you'd get a shadow in the middle of your image from the umbrella rigging.

(Not a problem when using a "reflective/bounce" umbrella setup.)

I would be surprised because the umbrella is going to bounce light all around the support structure. Something else to test I guess...

Tod, testing is the name of the game. (A game many are reticent to play)

I'm in the middle of a few unrelated tests here. When I've finished with those, I'm going to try this and see what results are forthcoming.

You are correct sir...
My theory is that the Speedlite is not that narrow of a light source and the light will still be bouncing around the umbrella even though shooting through it. Now the other question is does it change if you zoom the Speedlite flash. My 600RTs zoom from 24 to 200 I believe. I am not near my gear today so I can’t run a test either right now...
