Sony E-mount super telephoto lenses

Sony has announced two FE super telephoto lenses, a 600 mm f/4 prime and a 200-600 mm f/5.6-6.3 zoom.

Hopefully the independents will follow suit.

These new lenses fill a big gap in available e-mount glass for both Sony's full frame and APS-C mirrorless bodies. Both lenses have in-body stabilization, and are supposedly compatible with Sony's 1.4 and 2.0 e-mount teleconverters.

But the prime lists at almost $13,000. The independents are going to have to offer one heck of a deal.

Yes, $13,000, but it’s not cheap to put in body stabilization in the lens. 😜🤪

My guess is the independents will stick with a zoom, and leave the fast prime product (and astronomical price) to Sony. Sigma and Tamron should be able to undercut the zoom's $2,000 estimated price, just as they do with their current DSLR super zooms.

But it's good to see Sony seriously competing for the pro market with their mirrorless offerings.

There is no supposedly, the reviews on YuoTube clearly show both lenses being used with the SEL14TC and SEL20TC. As for the 3rd party companies, Sigma have their 150 - 600mm Contemporary and Sports lenses and Tamron has its 150 - 600mm G1 and G2 lenses. The lenses from both companies work (to a greater or lesser degree) with Canon to E mount adapters. Though both Sigma and Tamron make lenses specifically for Sony E mount, your guess us as good as mine as to whether they make their respective 150 - 600mm lenses in E mount. They may have missed the boat on this one: unless they make an announcement before August and at a much reduced cost.

The 600mm is out of reach for most photographers even at 1/2 the cost.

The 200-600mm is affordable to many enthusiasts but on the heavy side at just under 5 lbs.. If you already own the 100-400 a reasonable option is to mount it on an APS-C camera such as the A6400/6500 to get similar reach, more versatility and less weight at 1/2 the cost.

Not even mildly interest in either new lenses...

It is way out of reach for me. I am quite happy with the Sigma 150-600mm Canon wthe the MC-11. I was using it on my a7s and a6000. But I recently purchased the a7iii. It is spectacular focusing on the a7iii. It would have been nice for it to be directly E-mount but what the heck. Around $900 and used $600 beats the hell out of what Sony is asking.

Thanks for that. I was going to look up the price, but I knew it would be way more than I would consider paying.

Sony has strategically placed the prime to directly compete with the primes from Canon and Nikon. Interesting that they chose the 150-600 Sigma Sport and not the other 500mm or 600mm zooms to compete with. Especially since the Tamron G2 is $600 less and every bit as good as the Sport. It is nice to see that Sony has finally committed to getting themselves some respect as a pro camera manufacturer.

Probably targeting the professional sports photographers, or the very rich. Either way, the B700 will do similar things for quite a bit less.

No opinion until I either get one in my hands or read a responsible (not sensational or controversial like many internet troll reviewers - you know who they are) review and analysis.

Well let’s see... sports pros would probably prefer faster zooms or primes.

Is it fast focusing to keep up with the body FPS.

Is it handhold-able and weather-sealed well enough...

Those are a few questions that would come to mind...

Very impressive is the fact that the zoom is INTERNAL ! - but, it would be much more impressive if they would make it available in A-mount also !!
