75% rule equates to …?

I know what the 75% rule is and it makes sense to set that as a guide when considering what is a closeup and what isn’t. And I know that true macro lies at creating a 1:1 ratio image on the sensor, a 1" image covers a 1" sensor. And I know that a lot of lenses are called Macro but only focus down to a 1:4 ratio. Is the 1:4 ratio the same as the 75% rule? I’m mathematically challenged. If it is, then technically those lenses should be called Closeup lenses and not Macro lenses. Thanks for helping me figure this out.

Intuitively, it looks to me that if 1:1 is life size, then 1:4 would be 1/4 life size since it’s the same as 1/4:1.

And why is any of this important? I don't understand these "what is a true macro" discussions at all.

I'd worry more about if the subject is in sharp focus and highly detailed.

Whatever happened to composition, subject, use of color, image quality and so forth? Although not a very popular notion these days, there is still way more that constitutes a good image than sharpness and detail whether it be macro, closeup or landscape.

Do a search in the Closeup Forum. There’s quite a running discussion about it.

It's one of the stickied topics in this section: the rule used by original close-up forum moderators as to what defines a close-up photo for the section (subject fills 75% of the frame): https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-133507-1.html

Umm, that was in 2013 The original moderators were deleting topics that didn't fit their definition of close-up.

It is about composition, a subject that takes up at least 75% of the frame... nothing to do with lens or focal length.

.

75% seems a bit severe, though 😄

I agree with you Donna. The shot by "Old Hippy" posted today is simply lovely art. Sharp couldn't touch it.
