The 50 1.8 is lightweight, inexpensive, only half a stop slower, and just as sharp if not more-so than the 50mm 1.4. How often will that half stop, and slightly better bokeh make any difference in your photos? Just get/keep the 50 1.8 and work on technique.

What do you guys think what is the better 50mm lens a 50 1.8 afs lens or a 50 1.4 ais lens? Thanks Jim Bianco, I do not know what lens to get.

I like my 1.4 pre-AI.

Get the 50 mm 1.8 lens. The money difference alone makes this a no brainer. YOU will not notice ANY difference in sharpness. And their is minimal gain in speed, especially with today's high ISO and low noise camera's.
So, get my drift and get the 1.8.

I asked almost the same question a couple months ago - comparing the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D vs 50mm f/1.4G

After researching all of the available options, I decided to go ahead and spend the extra money on the Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G and love it.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens is a beast and heavy as hell: with a lot of people selling it used for about half price or less. It's sharp but in my opinion, the images are very sterile and clinical.

If you don't care about auto-focus, the Voitlander 58mm f/1.4 is a great lens and can be had for $500-600 used, and I would have bought this lens were it not for the lack of AF.

Yes, well-stated. Couldn't agree more. I do weddings, almost entirely with aNikon 50mm 1.8 D lens. Great, considering what they cost!! from Liverpool,UK.

Better? I know one thing, the 50mm f1.8D is the best deal Nikon has.

You are comparing an autofocus/autoaperture DSLR lens to a manual focus/aperture film camera lens. What are you putting it on?

Put mine on a D700, works just fine in Aperture manual focus. The lens is still available new from Nikon with auto focus.

Both are great, so it is a matter of personal preference, and personal budget. I have both the AF-S 1.8G, and the older AI-S 1.2. Both of them are great, and I use them in different ways, for different things. The 1.4 sits between the 1.2 and 1.8, aperture wise. Many people love the 1.4, and many others feel that the extra IQ / light gathering capability are fine, but not worth the extra cost....to them. Only you can say whether it is worth it to you. Watch a lot of Youtube videos comparing the two. Rent both, and shoot a lot with each, and compare the images from each. See which you like best. At f/2, nothing beats the AI-S f/1.2 for sharpness.....not even Sigmas, etc.

For the edification of anyone who is also ignorant of Nikon lenses, the 50 f/1.4 AiS does NOT have a manual diaphragm.

I also have both the 50mm f/2.0 non-AI and the 50mm f/1.8 AIS. I've also read where the f/2.0 is "better" than the f/1.8, but I have always been hard pressed to see any significant differences between them in portraiture, landscapes or document copying. They both have extremely flat fields of view with little to no barrel distortion, excellent resolution and, IMO, are both wonderful 50's. The f/1.4 AIS is a completely different (and more expensive) animal but is also a wonderful lens though for slightly different purposes.

As someone already stated above, choosing the f/1.8 should be a no brainer.
