On an outing at a camp. Was not able to bring everything on the flight. Found myself needing a tripod to shoot a mountain goat with a 2x on my 300mm. Discovered most unusual but effective substitute.
Nice but just don't let go!

Pardon me, but that is a zoom lens, not a 300mm, and if you put a 2X on it, you will not have auto focus. Please be accurate in your future posts.

Where did he say he was using autofocus? Maybe you should be “accurate in your future posts”.

If you cannot contribute, don't bother posting.
That looks like a good way to damage a decent camera! Good luck.

I was reminded of a cartoon. It takes place at a circus - the act was billed as the "Balancing Brothers" and shows one guy riding a bicycle while about 5 other guys balanced themselves on top of him. Great to watch this feat of balance. One spectator turns to another and says "They're not really brothers".
Did the lens description really matter?

what kind of wax do you use?
All kidding aside - a quadpod is almost always going to be more stable than a tripod, and being made out of wood, it will be far more vibration-resistant than anything made of metal. Can I call you the MacGyver of camera support?

He says he used a 300 mm lens with a 2X extender. That imply's he has a prime lens and probably an F4, which, as YOU know, can handle a 2X and still get auto focus with MOST of today's digital.
I believe it is important when you post here that you are as accurate as possible.
It was not a 300mm prime, it was a zoom that may or may not zoom out to 300. And since it was a zoom, it probably cannot auto focus with a 2X extender.
The OP just put a camera on this THING and took a picture of it to post, and that is all he was doing, trying to create a interesting post, except it was not accurate.
I believe we should be as accurate as we can in posting on this site. Otherwise, what is the point of posting.

Not the fanciest support I've ever seen, but good looks don't pay the rent.
If it worked it is a winner in my book!

Is his post really about the lens and extender or more about the clever use of a camera support? Aren't you more concerned about what kind of wood was used to make the skis?
Very good use of what you had at hand. If it worked for you great. I have used trees, fence post, broom and rake handles, and any thing that will hold still for me. Skip the rants of some on here.
