The question is, were you born this way, ( there might be a new drug for this) or did you somewhere, somehow lose it.
It must be hard going through life so angry and humorless.

Good luck and God Bless.

From the very beginning I encouraged my kids to make their own decisions. Many, many people criticized and of course, I had no way to prove my point until they became adults. I believed that the only way for them to learn to make good decisions is to practice by making a lot of choices, some good, some bad, but the key to the success of this was that they had to live by the consequences of their decisions. The only times I took charge of this was when I felt that the consequences may be morally threatening or life threatening.

Better to mess up at age 6 when your mistakes will be forgotten in a day or two rather than when you are 25 and opt for drugs as a way to make your life better.

When they did mess up, the rule was to use the present to learn from the past to make your future awesome.

Example: When my eldest son was in his final year of high school, he decided he would skip school the next day citing, “Senior Skip Day” as the reason. We had talked many times about how to make good choices and I reminded him that one important tool was to “use the resources at hand” and as a resource, I advised him for several reasons to go to school.

He spent a wonderful day playing games and watching T.V. then that evening asked me for a note excusing him from school. When I refused, he was very upset saying that this absence was a serious issue. I told him that as a loving parent I would assist him in writing a note of apology to the teacher, but he had made his decision and now was facing the consequences.

It was a very tough thing to do to a child you love, but since that day, none of my kids ever skipped school and they all learned from his poor choice.

This young man now manages an upscale private restaurant and is just about to have a Sci-Fi trilogy published. His sister graduated the youngest in her class with her doctorate of Pharmacy, is married, successfully raising two lovely children, working full time and is taking classes in advanced pharmaceutical chemistry. The youngest is an electrician and works two full time jobs.

The best advice I ever heard was that you do not stand in front of your child to shield them, nor do you stand behind them to catch them when they fall, but instead, stand beside them to give them strength.

Subject: Re: HIGH SCHOOL 1957 vs. 2017 ! ! ! !
By today's standards none of us were supposed to ever make it.

HIGH-SCHOOL
1957 vs. 2017

Scenario 1:

Jack goes duck hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2017- School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:

Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2017 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled - even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:

Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2017 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2017 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being spanked herself, and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.
2014 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:

Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2017 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2017 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The, FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957–In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2017- Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

how stupid we have become!
What Liberalism has done to our soceity... br br... (show quote)

When I was a teacher one of my students and I each had .357 magnum Ruger revolvers. A few times each year we would bring them to school, leave them locked in our cars, then go shooting after school. That was 40 years ago. When we see each other these days, we remisce and have a good laugh. Today we would be cell mates.
When I was a high school student in the 1960s, the ROTC had a shooting range for .22 rifles. It was in the school's basement. You could always hear gunshots after school. Someone asked about pistols. The ruling: OK, but you have to bring them in before school and we will keep them during the day. It was not uncommon to see a 16-year-old walk down the hall taking his pistol to the ROTC office. I get why that can't happen anymore, but it is a sad commentary on society.

I have enjoyed these comments. I'll make one more try to top some of them. I'm a little older than most of you. I did my first 8 grades in a one room country school. Our farm joined the school property. One year we needed a tree for Christmas at school. I took an axe and went over on our property and got a tree. Try taking an axe to school today. Would that be worse than taking a gun?

I can promise you that children diagnosed with ADD are NOT eligible for SSI disability or any other type of monetary compensation. In fact, as the parent of two ADD genetically afflicted boys, both properly diagnosed and treated (and tutored/assisted, not paddled), one of which has a masters degree and is an acclaimed teacher and the other a fire chief, I will break my long-standing rule against ad-hominem attacks, and call you what you are - a stupid, ignorant reprobate. You have insulted every parent and child who has agonized and struggled with this disability, and you owe them all an apology.

Here in the UK no gun culture...... but most boys carried a pen-knife and as a Boy-Scout a large sheath-knife and sometimes

a hand axe or a felling axe............they would probably call out the armed response team these days.

We go from one extreme to the other ! Was it that in earlier years there were fewer of us and so more space for "larger than life" behavior.?

What is absolutely certain is the fact that in-spite of regular playground fights no-one ever produced a weapon, kicked the other guy,or set out to

inflict serious damage. Teachers did not interfere, parents were not involved and following the fights equilibrium was re- established.

But the winds of change have blown strong, and today, those people who are being freed from the stigma of being 'not perfect' and not worthy, if they have to stir the pot to get it done, so be it.

It's always been a struggle between those who have and those who have not. Right now, the have nots are making progress, even in the face of hate and disrespect. Perhaps we will one day will follow the greatest commandment..."Love one another".

True, but EVERY correspondence on-topic indicated that the Framers, for reasons of Union formation, and for reasons of historical knowledge and of foresight, had NO, repeat, ZERO, desire to install a pure democracy. The reasons were clear. With no account for lesser populated states, no Union would form. And, every point on topic noted that pure democracy becomes a permanent victimization of the minority. The old example of two lions and one gazelle voting on what's for dinner.
