Yesterday on a short walk thru what I will call St. Luke's( the church name). The rehab site.
There is another way to ID some of the dragonflies that is amazingly simple.
They have been given very descriptive common names over the years, similar to birds.
As I was looking over some blooming milkweed, I looked down to find a dragonfly at my feet. Pics in a bit. I noted how fresh it looked and very carefully picked it up. A teneral female Libellula pulchella.
I recognized it as a skimmer, with twelve spots. No quantum leap to get to twelve spotted skimmer. A check with Paulson says a female. That was easy.
The milkweed is beautiful now. Flower heads full, few aphids, deep new green. But no monarchs yet.
The pics I am about to post were shot with a 500mm /f8 Zykkor reflex mirror lens . I paid $65 for. Was not what was advertised so got my money back, fellow said keep lens. I cobbled a useless EF canon lens base to fit and put it on my T2I. Focus not great at any distance, fuzzy. Put a 20mm tube on. These photos shot in manual(only choise) and wide open(only choise). This lens sees well in dim light and seems to work as a macro with reach.
Thoughts on photo quality,please.
This is the second lens Ihave reconfigured, the other is a 1.5or 2x macro Now.

What luxury to have ponds at your disposal. You are find a goodly assortment of subjects. You mention focusing, I expect you already know this, but tubes restrict the distance you can focus, the more tubes the less the distance.

The dragon close up came out good. The others are generally blurry. A mirror lens? Those are generally going to be a bit soft, I hear, although the theory of them is intriguing with a long focal length packed inside a short barrel. I don't know how the rule about shutter speed versus focal length applies to their optics. Then there is the problem of getting the rear element (whatever that will be) at the right distance to the sensor.
Does this lens have a manual aperture? I suppose maybe not. But you could put in a fixed aperture inside, made from opague paper. Don't know where to place it for optimum effect.

The 500mm lens came with a ? base. I swapped for an EF base.
The lens would not focus at infinity.
I would not think that the new base went on the same distance from the sensor, but???.
By adding 20mm between camera and lens, I can now focus from a couple of meters to about 50 meters.
DOF seems to be somewhat shallow. But. I think the potential is there for this to produce some much clearer shots.
I really do not understand all that is going on, but some more shooting called for.
As Mark said, I have seen something that says that softness is inherent with these lenses. One thing, at least the price was right.
